Lunch didn't live up to the lovely venue.

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Mar 2017
Visited with a group of ladies for lunch, anticipating something special from what appears to be a rather unique venue. We were directed into the library which is a beautiful room, very atmospheric at any time of day and reserved for us. Throughout our lunch the staff were extremely attentive to everyone and rectified a couple of problems without fuss. The food was unfortunately disappointing, everything was just OK, maybe my expectations were too high but I don't think so as others echoed my feelings.
Since my visit I have spoken with a friend who recently visited for afternoon tea and couldn't fault any aspect which is reassuring.

My husband and I spent five nights at this lovely hotel last week.
Our room was spotlessly clean as was the en suite. The bathroom was a little tired but the shower was the easiest to operate I have ever come across in a hotel. My only complaint about the bathroom was the lack of hip height grab rail over the bath. For those of us who are less agile or whose balance is not the best it would make having a shower much easier.
The housekeeping team continued to look after us very well for the whole of our stay ......and thank you for the delicious oaty biscuits you left for us each day!
Our evening meal in the lovely Brasserie on the Sunday evening was OK but the meals we had on three of the other four nights were excellent (We ate out on the fourth night with a friend a few miles away).
We both really enjoyed our breakfasts each morning. The attentive staff bought us tea or coffee very quickly and we could select from a variety of fruit, cereal, croissants etc on the buffet table. Staff took our orders for cooked food and this was served within a few minutes on hot plates. The last two mornings I had smoked haddock and poached eggs which were cooked to perfection.
All the staff were so pleasant, friendly and polite. Their natural courtesy made us feel most welcome and we thank them for that.
One of the receptionists asked us if we intended visiting Durham. When we said we did she suggested we might use the Park and Ride facility rather than try and park in the very small city. We were given simple and very easy to follow instructions to the Park and Ride. There is a huge car park which is free and the buses run every 10 minutes. Being of a certain age we could use our Freedom Passes on the bus. The bus stopped a short distance from the impressive cathedral. It made the few hours spent in the city completely stress free.
We found our stay here so relaxing and comfortable and would love to return in the future. Thank you!

Hello and thank you for such a wonderful review posted here on Trip Advisor following your 5 night break with us.
I was fantastic to read how the hard working team looked after you both thought out your stay, keeping the oaty biscuits topped up. I have of course passed onto the team all your great comments.
In regards to your comments about the grab rail, I have taken this on board, and am delighted to say that we have just had a walk in shower installed to one of or ground floor rooms.
Once again thank you for your review, and for choosing Whitworth Hall for your stay, we do hope to see you again in the future.

    Kind Regards

We spent 2 nights here and would be happy to return if visiting the area. This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The staff were all friendly and the food excellent. The room was maybe a little dated but spacious clean and comfortable. We mentioned a fault that developed with the TV and on returning to the room it had been replaced. Would recommend for a short break or as a wedding venue

I attended a wedding at this hotel on Febuary 21st and it was amazing, the hotel is in beautiful grounds with deers in the field next door. The rooms were fantastic lovely comfortable bed and a great bathroom. The wedding planner David Abbot-Coyle did a magnificent job of organizing the wedding and the afternoon tea for the wedding reception was a lovely change to the usual sit down meal .If I had any complaints it would be that there was too much food and we couldnt finish it which was a shame because it was delicious. we stayed overnight and the breakfast was just as delicious
With a good choice of food and all beautifully cooked. All the staff were helpful and nothing was a problem.Thank you for a wonderful stay

Room tip: Room 2 was lovely
