Thirteen of us had afternoon tea at Whitworth Hall served in the Garden Room. It was beautifully presented, plenty of choice and excellent service by very attentive staff. We couldn't fault it. The hotel is situated in lovely manicured gardens complete with a deer park.

Had one night at the hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Room was huge and looked over the deer park. Breakfast was delicious and plenty to choose from. Staff were very friendly. Loved feeding the deer. Would definitely go again.

Had a two night break at Whitworth Hall Hotel, staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent, room comfortable very clean and spacious. The grounds are beautiful and the deer park an experience all should sample. It puts a smile on faces of both young and old. It was nice to have breakfast whilst watching the deer playing. There are some nice non taxing walks around the area. The River Wear is not that far from the hotel and there are walks along the banks. We don't normally go back to a place we have previously visited but would return to this hotel. Thank you to the staff for for making our short stay a memorable one.

Room tip: I believe all rooms to be out facing

We stayed over the Easter weekend on a Secret Escapes break.

On the positive side the hotel's grounds and surroundings are beautiful and the hotel itself is well-kept and very clean. There was plenty of choice at breakfast including some unusual items such as pigs' cheeks, and our various choices over three mornings consisted of good quality ingredients which were perfectly cooked - especially the fish. We paid no extra for staying over Easter and on the whole the break was good value.

On the negative side our room smelled of cigarette smoke, we had no wifi even though this was reported to the staff on several occasions and our room looked out onto the rubbish bins. I suspect this is a room kept for those on special offers.

in addition, our deal included a 2 course meal in the Brasserie on our first night. My husband had lamb which he described as good, but his dessert of Banoffie Pie contained a runny syrup like sauce instead of the usual caramel - not nice. My choice of cheese souffle was OK but whoever produced it obviously had no understanding of the fact that the French word souffle means 'breath' or 'puff - it was dense and flat. My dessert was on the menu as white chocolate mousse with raspberries and was chosen because raspberries are my favourite fruit. However, when it arrived I was surprised to find there were no raspberries. This was mentioned to the waiter who came back a few minutes later with a small ramekin of what looked like the last dregs of a packet of frozen raspberries - maybe a tablespoon's worth of bits. There was not a single whole raspberry and they tasted stale and rubbery.

The latter experience put us off eating at the hotel other than our breakfasts.

My observation is that with a little TLC and attention to detail this hotel could be fantastic. Maybe a little honesty is needed too: for example, telling us from the beginning that there was no wifi in our room and saying when my dessert was ordered that there were no raspberries. Not everyone can have a fantastic view but the bins could have been moved and the storage area outside our room made more aesthetically pleasing with some flowers in pots etc.

Room tip: Avoid room 27.

Hello

Firstly please except my sincere apologise for both the short falls in service and food you both experienced during your stay with us, and I have passed on all your comments to the team, things such as these as highlighted by you should simply not happen as for the smell of smoke in the room that is down to poor housekeeping because as you know all or rooms are none smoking. I have to say we are continually working on the wi-fi coverage in and around the hotel, and have just invested in a number of new relay points to help, however the main issue is down to the location of the property. I have also spoken the grounds team and we are looking into ways to help improve the out look from the room you stayed in. I would like to thank you for your kind words in relation to the grounds, cleanliness, and the breakfast items.
In finishing I would like to once again thank you for all your comments and for choosing Whitworth Hall, and we do hope to see you return.
Yours sincerely

Christopher Ashby

Stayed here on a Secret Escapes deal.
Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings.
Everything about the stay was good apart from service at breakfast.
On both days the service was very slow. It took about 15 minutes for our order to be taken and as long again to wait for it arriving.
The staff on the second day were very apologetic but the two ladies on Good Friday left a lot to be desired.
We were given cold toast and never asked if we wanted more or if we wanted more tea.
We did note that they spent a long time chatting to the family on the next table and heard them being offered more tea and toast.
On a plus point the staff at dinner were great and couldn't do enough for you.
Would stay here again though.
