All I've got to say is if you are thinking of getting married here then do it - it was completely amazing! In a time when people pay tens of thousands on weddings we did ours at Whitworth with all the trimmings for £5000. We had an afternoon wedding - midweek when it's all free - and a summer evening BBQ instead of a set meal. It was completely and utterly fabulous and I'd recommend it to anyone. The staff at the Whitworth made every second of our day perfect, and a special mention to Dan who worked so so hard and was completely brilliant. I'd do it all again tomorrow!! It was relaxing, casual and stress free. Full marks for this hotel.

The staff at this hotel are lovely, and the hotel has potential to be really good. The deer park setting is beautiful. On the downside - the room we had was way overdue a refurbishment - the wall paper was peeling off the wall in the window area, the blind had no cord, the bathroom had fake gold fixtures and shower screen. The high speed wifi was very patchy. Some of the public areas are in good condition, but the library restaurant is starting to show signs of needing a refurb as well. The ceiling was peeling in couple of spots, there was a crack in the ceiling and someone should dust around the wine bottles on the shelf over the breakfast buffet table. The dinner in the restaurant was also over priced for the quality of cooking - I had a chicken dish where the chicken was dried out, served on an unappetizing bed of crushed potato with very little sauce.

Booked this hotel for a anniversary break as I though a premier inn is just a bit bland for that sort of thing.
I couldn't specify the room so just hoped I got a room like the ones people were raving about. We did!!! 4 poster bed. Thai theamed. Elephants here and there. Mirrors all over the place. Purple everywhere with dark wooden floors. Actually, it sounds a bit garish but it wasn't. My wife loved it as did I. Bathroom large too. Room 12 by the way.
The breakfast was very good. Didn't eat at any other time but the bar snacks, especially the fish 'n' chips, looked amazing. Large portion too.
You can buy a bag of deer food at reception for 80 pence and as soon as the deer see that brown paper bag they surround you. Without the bag they aren't interested! Brilliant grounds.
There is a seperate Inn by the lake, called the Lakeside believe it or not. Doesn't open late so be warned. Didn't go there though, because of this!
Wifi - advertised throughout the builing, not so.

A good location to base yourself to see County Durham. 10 minutes to Durhum City which is about £15 in a taxi. All taxis seem to be hackneys so maybe that is why they are a bit more expensive than the private hires.

When driving around the county turn your sat nav to avoid motorways, doesn't take any longer and the scenary is amazing.
Go to Beamish Open Air Museum. You must. With or without kids. You will appreciate it. You can spend a good 5+ hours there no problems.

Loved our stay here.

This hotel is lovely - set in a deer park in a lovely quiet area. Efficient check in and check out. The rooms were nice - clean and comfortable. Free wi-fi which is a bonus. The TV channels were OK - obviously suffering from poor reception due to the hotels location. The information provided is not presented well - on photocopied paper stapled together. Also it appears that you can only get sandwiches on the room service menu - on conversation with reception - this is not true - room service includes the lounge and bar restaurant. The lounge menu was very limited with sandwiches, lasagne or fish and chips as the choice. I was a bit disappointed in this poor choice. I had room service from the restaurant menu which was quick in arriving. However, don't have the chips as they were not cooked - they were soft - but not crispy at all. A mass of soggy fatty potato. The steak was well cooked, however lacked flavour. The breakfast was adequate, but disappointing in the flavour again.
Overall I would recommend the hotal, however the food was disappointing.

Based on raves of Tripadvisor contributors, we chose this hotel for our stay in Durham. It is located on a narrow country road a few kilometers outside Durham, but signs and our Tom-tom GPs made finding it simple. The hotel in the manor house of the vast estate could not be more picturesque with two deer herds roaming free on acres on acres of the park like grounds, happy to be fed by guests. Given its location it is a popular venue for weddings, and on our arrival two celebrations were under way.
Welcomed by a friendly receptionist, we asked for a quiet room with no creaking floorboards above and were offered several choices in a one-story annex at the opposite end, away from the wedding celebrations. Having stayed in a Premier Inn the previous night and inexperienced in hotel room rates in the UK, we were utterly surprised with the B&B rate offered. It made this manor hotel an outright bargain.
Rooms are decorated in period style, many with poster beds. Our room #18 came with two beds pushed together into a queen size bed with comfortable mattresses. With a window looking out onto the green woods, the carpeted room was superbly quiet. It was comfortably furnished with two overstuffed chairs, a side table, desk with chair, wardrobe, and decorated with pleasingly striped wallpaper. The beautifully floor to ceiling tiled bathroom with a glass panel enclosed tub/shower combo and with gilded fixtures adding a touch of class was super clean and spotless.
The restaurant is in the classy setting of the old mansion library. While we could not recommend the duck a la orange, a sweet waitress made our dinner nevertheless an enjoyable evening. Breakfast was served from a well assorted buffet in the library restaurant as well. All in all, this hotel while away from the city center offers a great deal for the money for those who don't mind the distance to town and prefer the quiet ambiance of the deer park estate setting. We would stay there again without even the slightest hesitation.

We have just returned from a short stay at this hotel. It will certainly be a stay to remember for the friendly welcome and superb setting. Our room was very spacious and had a lovely view over the deer park. The library dining room provides a relaxing and unusual setting for breakfast and dinner and the food is of good quality. The Inn on the Lake which is in the grounds of the country park gives an alternative eating venue for pub style food and is worth visiting. Unfortunately, it does close early. We definitely hope to return to Whitworth Hall!!

3 adults for 1 night. Come in early (not like us), to enjoy the hotel and gardens. Relax at the bar. Breakfast not included. Good price. Fantastic old style decoration. Very large rooms. We stayed on the first floor- rooms 9&10 at 50 pounds!. Not all parts of the hotel, (ground floor), are astonishing as the first floor.
