“One night stay as part of the coast to coast route”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

We stayed here for one night as part of the coast to coast route in a dorm room sleeping 5 people.

The YHA is currently up for sale and will either be sold as is (i.e. continue to be a hostel) or be turned into something else.

This is apparently the oldest YHA in the country, and it did feel a little like that. Our room was very warm, and we struggled to open the windows. Bunk Beds probably seen better days, but the room was clean.

Overall could do with an upgrade but suited our needs.

Accomodation has shared toilets, showers, kitchen and there is a dry room. There is a store area for bikes.

As with the other reviewers I can find no fault with this gem of a YHA. Just spent two nights there as a family and it was cosy, welcoming and a real home from home. The kitchen is well equipped and the pub across the road is lovely. We did a fabulous eight mile walk following a map provided by the hostel which was great.

6 bedrooms here, smallest sleeps 3 and the largest sleeps 6. £18.00 if you sleep in the dorm - no en-suite here, just bunk beds. Comfy and warm. Members Kitchen if you fancy cooking your own, or the Punch Bowl pub across the road if you are lazy.
Staff friendly and helpful, all are volunteers, be brilliant if they can get the showers sorted!

Not open in winter

Room Tip: Join the YHA - rooms are £3.00 cheaper. Speical offer on at the moment means you can join for ander...

Got a room for a night on our way to Scotland and never expected much, but were pleasantly surprised of how beautiful and well-maintained this hostel is! It's located in a period cottage with most features still present inside, a lovely large common room with a huge wooden table for board games and a period fireplace, wooden beams all over, wooden / tile floors, back garden, absolutely beautiful entrance and very friendly and helpful staff. Of course, there is a dining room and a kitchen for everyone's use; the hostel is quiet and clean, maybe a bit chilly in the evening, but warm and cosy under the duvet.

It's possible to get into the hostel after 11pm (you get a special code for the back door) and a nice pub with a good selection of ales is just 3 mins away. The nature is also beautiful.

The only downside would be its location - a bit difficult to find at night and the parking is very small, on the corner of the building on gravel, right next to the main road. We were lucky to get a spot there, but at busy times might be a good idea to call in advance to check on parking.

Overall a lovely place, would like to go back and would definitely recommend to others!

Room Tip: The room for 5 people is on the ground floor and it's great because it's the only room on th...

This youth hostel is amazing its so homely, clean with friendly staff the area is amazing and for such a old building the disabled facilities are amazing. We stayed here for 2 nights so we could visit english heritage sights along Hadrians wall, and we have got to say it was a great base to do so our room was so cosy and we didnt want to get out of bed on a morning and we certainly didnt want to go to the toilet because the toilet was cold because our room was so cosy we couldnt have asked for anything more and cant wait to return which we will be in a couple of weeks time.
