I really like the Consett Empire and have been to many memorable shows at the theatre. Staff are very friendly and helpful and it is a superb facility for the town.
On Saturday 23rd of November The Dust Town Dogs,(a local band),were appearing. You would have been fortunate to know this as the advertising at the venue was next to nothing, just one small poster that was actually took out of the window on the day of the show.
The band had sold enough tickets by themselves to just about fill the place and the atmosphere was buzzing for a big show.
400 people in the house and they shut the bar. How much money has the Empire lost? The staff explained that their drinks licence doesn't allow them to serve during a performance.

I hope the manager has been onto the licensing authorities this morning to get this changed. When venues are desperate for revenue it's just throwing money away.

I fully realise that all shows at the theatre are not like this one but the facility should be able to cater for a band night.

The Dogs were great and generated a fantastic party atmosphere. (Balloons were a great idea). Unfortunately Consett Empire wasn't up to the task this time.

Coming here is a delightful experience, starting with wonderful friendly staff, which is an unusual find in cinemas nowadays! You also don't get fleeced by the refreshments. You can have a film, drink, and popcorn for under a tenner!

The screen does need changing, but my other half says she never noticed (it's sagging slightly, but maybe I'm just a pedant.) Sound system is really good, although (again, audio/videophile pedant,) the EQ needs properly calibrating. That however was another thing my other half said she never noticed!

All in all, a lovely venue, and a treat to have such a good value cinema if you're willing to wait a few weeks for films to arrive.

Only one screen. The sound is fab and the 3d too. My only gripe is that too often they can't process card payments so you have to walk around the corner to a cash machine.

The Empire is a great asset to Consett, bringing in great talent like the Moscow Ballet and the Black Dyke Mills Band, but also showcasing talented local actors and musicians as well as providing digital projection for the latest cinema. It's a fantastic asset to us all, and also a pleasant place to drop into for a coffee or snack.
