“Brilliant stay”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We stayed for 2 nights with 2 other friends. When we arrived we were greeted with tea and cake! We loved the little fridge under the stairs where we could help ourselves to speciality teas, fresh milk and juice. The lounge was very comfortable and great place to relax before going to bed. We had the 2 rooms on the ground floor. Our bed was comfortable, there was a wardrobe, dressing gowns, kettle, biscuits, lots of little touches lacking in hotels we have stayed in.

Breakfast was delicious, with a range of cereals and a great choice of cooked to order food.

Yarcombe very close to lots of places to visit in the car, we also did a nice circular hike from the hotel.

The hosts are very welcoming and we would not hesitate to stay again.

Thank you travelbugWimborne_UK for your lovely review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Another great circular walk from here is to the Candlelight Inn at Bishopswood - our favourite pub to walk to on a Sunday, or indeed any day. The walk is beautiful, through the Blackdown Hills, an AONB and allegedly "an undiscovered Cotswolds" About an hour there and back, but do take a flask so you can ask for a Hot Toddy for the return journey.....Oh Yes......

My wife and I found this hotel on the internet, we were en route to River Cottage and just needed a place to stay. What a find. We were greeted with tea/coffee and homemade cake in the lounge. Neil was very pleasant and had time to chat. Our room was the Byron. Very comfy and equipped with all you needed. If you go book dinner, it is a delight. You have to choose and let them know in advance. Seemed strange but everything is freshly cooked and beautifully presented. Breakfast next morning was a struggle as we were still full from the night before, but we managed a morsel or two! We were the only first timers but we will rectify that.

Thank you paulann2014 for your lovely review of being "first timers" at The Belfry on your way to River Cottage HQ. We do just ask for your menu choices from the monthly menu in advance so we can cook to order just for you as a person rather than "en-mass". It means we can offer a comprehensive menu that everyone raves about and food is cooked fresh daily for you. We also have zero food waste which today, we think is jolly important. Any food waste we do have either goes into the wormery or into the food recycling...the little darlings don't appear to like onion, leeks or garlic! We look forward to seeing you again, with best wishes, Sarah-Jane

This was a last minute booking, extending a business stay, decided to go a little off the beaten track and ended up booking this and the Byron room.
Parking was great, right by the property, just the right amount of welcome from hostess on arrival. Shown the residents lounge, nice place to chill, and then the room.
Great comfy bed, soft pillows and lovely ample towels. L'Occitane toiletries complimented a first class stay.
Breakfast served between 8am and 9am, ooooh how I wanted to stay in that comfy bed longer!!
Breakfast was just right, nicely cooked and great choice.
Would I stay here again? Yes definately.

Stayed here on route to Devon and were given a very warm welcome on arrival after a gruelling journey of over 4 hours. We were tired and hungry but the dining room was not open that night so we intended to eat at the Yarcombe Inn across the road.. We requested some ice so we could have a welcome drink and it was delivered immediately - room very comfortable with some nice touches - lovely comfortable bed and pillows. Bathroom functional, good toiletries, nice fluffy towels and face cloths which I appreciate. Negative comment but not much room for wash bags, shaving gear etc. Unfortunately after walking over to the pub we were told the Chef was on holiday so no food available. On return to The Belfry we bumped into Neil who recommended a place up the road but we said we had had a drink and did not feel up to driving anywhere. A few minutes after arriving in our room Neil knocked on the door and said that Sarah could provide a chicken curry with rice if we could wait 15 mins. It was served in the lounge and it was delicious. Not very often I get to have a curry as my husband is not keen but he at least gave it a try and said it was OK!!!!!! Men!!!!! We were very grateful to have been offered something to eat - thank you very much Sarah - you went the extra mile. Breakfast was very good - best bacon I have tasted. Spoke to a resident who uses The Belfry quite often and he said it was a good job we didn't eat across the road as he had tried it and did not rate the food! Lovely location but we had a tight schedule and could not explore the village and beyond. However, if we were to find ourselves in the neck of the woods again I would not hesitate to stay here again or to recommend it to others.

Thank you for your lovely review Tricia298, we are so pleased your enjoyed your stay. It was lucky we had just prepared a chicken curry for our dinner to last a couple of nights which meant we could share some with you in the circumstances!!!. Please note, chicken curry is not and I don't think, ever will be, on the menu! If you are ever in this neck of the woods again, look us up, just not on Sunday or Tuesday when the restaurant is closed for dinner as I just have to have a night off!! With kind regards Sarah-Jane

This was our second visit to the lovely Belfry and it's lovely hosts Sarah Jane and Neil. The food is absolutely wonderful and the rooms sooo comfortable! We stayed in Coleridge both visits and the bed is v.v.v.comfortable so I know my rest is assured!! The village itself is charming with lovely walks around the hills on the doorstep and of course a visit to the community run pub across the road is a must.
