“Wonderful wedding venue:”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2008

Having visited this venue previously for business conference, we suggested to our daughter and prospective son in law they may like to consider Highgate for their wedding. At first they were a little hesitant, as previous reviews state, the car park area and entrance to the Hotel is somewhat off putting due to the nature of the new buildings, but once inside the reception and courtyard area, the whole ambiance changes. Beautiful old ironstone house with leaded light mullioned windows, great garden area with perfect backdrops for photographs, plenty of seating for pre meal drinks and even garden games for the children (indeed adults too).
Rooms inside the house are good, very comfortable beds, clean linen and towels daily. Some of the rooms in the grounds could do with upgrading but understand this is being addressed.
Staff were excellent, couldn't do enough to help, the food was superb and plenty of it.
Small touches like the open fridge with bottled water and fruit drinks, biscuit jar and tea, coffee etc on a 'help yourself' basis was appreciated.
The baronial hall was very impressive for the ceremony and the dining room well placed for the Wedding Breakfast and transformed in the evening for the 'party' with small stage and dance floor.
Only two small criticisms, the tariff system needs to be sorted:
i.e. internet, and 'special rates' and direct to the hotel all seem to be different according to the day of the week!!
If one is booking 4 or 5 rooms for two nights, there could be a difference of £100 in the total package of B and B.
As we found to our cost. Also, the bathrooms could all do with a magnifier mirror!
Other than that, a wonderful day to remember, even the sun came out despite the weather predicition. Thanks to all concerned.

I would agree with lots of the other reviewers - this place is exactly like a sprawling motel which totally spoils it despite reasonable rooms. The room we stayed in was quite nice and had been updated, there wasn't a bath which was disappointing. Breakfast was good with lots of choice. Overall I wouldn't stay here again nor would I recommend it.

As described in earlier reviews, the hotel has an old manor-style house which is quite beautiful, however it is surrounded by 'Crossroads Motel' style buildings, circa 1970. From the back (where reception is) it looks like Butlins. The room was a bit dated - it needed serious redecoration to make it a 4*, although it was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and the pool terrace area (where breakfast was served) was very nice - if only our room had been decorated as nicely!

Overall I wouldn't discourage anybody from staying here - it was quite satisfactory - but personally I wouldn't bother again. The complex layout of the hotel and dated mixture of building styles makes me think that what is really needed is a serious injection of cash and a bit of demolition and rebuilding. Ditch the whitewashed cubed buildings and develop a physical infrastructure more complementary to the main building!

Booked this as a last minute weekend break and was quite disappointed all things considered.

The hotel's website shows it as a charming country manor set in idyllic countryside. In truth, yes there is a nice manor house, and it is set in pleasant countryside, however its also next to a noisy main road, and the manor house is surrounded by ugly, randomly situated, dated 'motel' style outbuildings - in likelihood this will be you accommodation. Its worth mentioning that upon check-in you will be given a map to find your way around!

We may have been unlucky staying in the 'Roydon' outbuilding - the room was small, and in good need of redecorating with marked walls and stained bedlinen, headboard, and carpets. The bathroom, although large, was also very dated and looking a bit shabby. The accommodation certainly didn't look like any of the bedrooms pictured on the website.

The swimming pool was in a strange location and didn't appear particularly inviting so we didn't bother. Was amused by the hotel's welcome book as it stated you needed to 'book' the sauna at least an hour in advance - presumably because it saves on the costs of heating it continuously!

Adding to our misfortune were the two instances of the fire alarm sounding, first on the night we arrived, and secondly the following morning whilst getting ready for breakfast. As the previous night's alarm had been confirmed to us as a 'false alarm' we weren't too concerned when it went off in the morning - it wasn't until the staff were knocking at the door that we knew it had been traced to our room (reasons unknown)! On checking out, the receptionist said that the sensor in our room was problematic but 'only seemed to go off every couple of weeks' - get it fixed!

Breakfast was the (relative) highlight of our stay - average for a 4 star hotel but a decent choice of the normal hot and cold food, served buffet style.

Wouldn't recommend it. Maybe adequate for a tedious work conference but poor for somewhere nice to stay

The setting is stunning, so was the view from my room. I stayed in the old house and it felt a little like a converted dormitory, but perfectly pleasant. The bathroom was huge and clean. The bed comfortable. Take advantage of the fact that you can borrow a bicycle, it's great terrain for riding both on and off road. The staff was exceptionally friendly.

The brochure and website show a beautiful country manor house but this only forms a very small part of Highgate House.

This place primarily a conference venue with a very unsympathetic set of 70's buildings forming the majority of the venue.

I was lucky enough to have one of the manor house bedrooms which was very pretty, decorated in a very traditional 'Laura Ashley' style. The bed was extremely comfortable and every modern amenity provided (including plasma TV, White Company toiletries etc). Housekeeping was another matter however. The room had a really musty smell which someone had tried to mask with a very strong plug-in air freshener, the scent of which was so strong I almost had an asthma attack, cobwebs were numerous, hundreds of cigarette butts were left uncleared on the small ledge/balcony outside the window, and the safety inspection on the hairdryer was over a year out of date.

The majority of the bedrooms are in 70's annexes and I assume are not as plush as those in the house. The location of the swimming pool (near the bar) is very odd.

As a cenference venue, Highgate House is very good and appears to cater effortlessly for 15 or more parties. Food and service are excellent.

Overall, a bit of a mixed review - great for a conference but I wouldn't spend my own money here or visit for pleasure.

What an interesting place. A country house on one side, Crossroads Motel round the back.
The main house is lovely: a real English mansion house, but the extensions for conferences etc at the back really spoil the overall appeal. This is a great pity because the staff are lovely and very efficient and I had the best night's sleep ever in a hotel room!
The surrounding countryside is beautiful , the views are great, but how did the planners allow the new developments to sprawl across such a beautiful site?
I was at a conference which worked smoothly , everyone checked out with no problems , the food was good , the bar pleasant and welcoming. What a pity that everyone's reaction to Highgate House was negative because of the poor design of the new buildings.
