Had a week here as a corporate in a group. The food is amazing!!! Really nice. Compliments to the chef and his team. Can imagine would be a great wedding venue too. Excellent staff. Great service. Only reason not a 5.....rooms fairly dated. Hot and stuffy. Dodgy showers you run for 5mins to get warm water :-)

We spent a night at this hotel in August 13 and had a fabulous stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the breakfast was superb and the 2 rooms we booked where great and included free wifi which kept the teenager happy! We used the swimming pool in the morning which, although quite small, was adequate and kept very clean and tidy as was the hotel itself. The grounds were well kept and peaceful and we would recommend a stay to anyone - can't wait to go back. We liked the idea of having a special area where we could help ourselves to free tea and coffee.

Stayed here as part of the Battle Prom experience. Hotel lovely, a few confused staff, all very busy with wedding fever so much so that we felt a little ignored. That said accommodation very comfortable, food especially breakfast was excellent. Chef was so helpful and polite and could give the rest of the staff a lesson on the importance of good customer service. Would happily return.

Room Tip: Remember that the hotel is not all you see on arrival, the various blocks of accommodation behind th...

My partner and I booked this at short notice for a one night escape; the hotel's location on a ridge in a village tempted me, with the potential for pleasant walks and good views. The leisure facilities also sounded appealing. However, having taken the plunge and booked I then made the mistake of reading further down the list of reviews on here so that, by the time we arrived, I was expecting to stay in a shabby holiday camp. Overall I couldn't have been more wrong.
The car park surrounded by chalets doesn't exactly inspire confidence but the Reception area had sliding doors off the car park so that seemed suddenly more sophisticated and promising (glad I didn't arrive at the push door on the other side first!). I feared that we would be allocated one of the chalets though.
Magda at Reception was extremely helpful, particularly because my partner had arrived earlier, checked in and had expressed concern about the first room we'd been offered: it was near the main road and he is a light sleeper. Very helpfully Magda suggested an alternative, Room 113 and it was amazing. The route to it, mind you, was odd: back to chalet land with a drab route across the back of the original house, down a narrow path, through a fire door into a 'modern' (1970s?) wing, down a few more corridors but then to the room: WOW! A king size bed, plenty of space for suitcases and other luggage, a large fan to counteract the midsummer heat, two windows which opened fully (although we closed them when not in the room as it was on the ground floor), kettle, free water and biscuits, etc etc. The bathroom was well appointed with plenty of towels although, when we rang to book dinner, Reception did make a point of asking whether we needed more towels.
We'd paid for an Althorp package which included dinner, breakfast and two tickets to Althorp (£127 total).
So to dinner: well I'd feared bangers and mash ie budget food for a budget package but in fact dinner was perfect. The offer included a "soft drink" but we received a complimentary bottle of wine! There was waitress service, the food was well presented and although it had obviously been costed quite precisely (well that's a good way to run a business) the portions were ample, given that the starters came with bread and there were three courses. People who usually polish off 2 Big Macs at a sitting might feel hungry afterwards but it suited us well. The waiting staff were very pleasant and attentive without lurking annoyingly. There was a set menu with four or five choices for each course including vegetarian options; really, we couldn't fault it for the price point. One could eat at a far smarter establishment and feel ripped off whereas at Highgate House the food is smart enough (elegant without being pretentious) AND the dining room is quite smart, with white linen napkins at dinner (paper at breakfast) and good sized wine glasses, comfortably upholstered seating, enough space between tables, a large central atrium to give elegant proportions; and the staff left time for us to linger between courses. There was no offer of coffee to end dinner but we wouldn't have wanted it anyway; also, we had t&c facilities in our room, so that was fair enough.
By that point we had not stepped foot inside the old house, where a wedding reception was in full flow. We asked at Reception where we were allowed to walk and they said "anywhere" so off we went to explore. On the lawns in front of the wedding reception's venue there were croquet mallets and other outdoor games but we simply walked some distance further along and danced 'by the light of the silvery moon' on the grass, to the wedding music drifting over to us. Then we sat on a bench and chatted as though in our own garden, by then 10pm or so and nobody else around; blissful.
Breakfast the next day was similarly impressive though a more relaxed affair, being a buffet though tea and coffee were brought to us in pots so that was a civilised touch (I often stay in Premier Inns where one has to make tea from a bag and carry it back oneself.) Otherwise breakfast was quite like a P I one in style but less chaotic since the different elements of the meal (cereal, cooked breakfast and toast) were in different areas so there was no queuing and it all felt very calm and well organised. A lovely touch: quality newspapers eg Sunday Telegraph available to borrow (we had been offered but had declined a personal copy in our room) so we sat and worked our way through the 'papers until well after we'd finished eating.

To summarise, this experience was very impressive for the price point (or for £100 more for that matter) and the staff could not have been more helpful or cheerful. Magda was still smiling the next morning and wished us well as we left. We headed to Althorp where our tickets were instantly accepted and the next stage of our adventure began.
I know what one reviewer meant when he said 'needs to decide what it is': the initial impressions are of a shabby, tired collection of outbuildings ripe for redevelopment but step inside and a far better story unfolds; especially if one is given Room 113.
A word about the health facilities: my partner used the gym and said that the complex was quite small but that it contained everything one could need for a workout (he uses a gym a few times each week); he then used the pool on the Sunday morning and that was more basic, first requiring a trip back to Reception to borrow the key then for the pool cover to be rolled back (this was not a swish place with Jacuzzi etc, just a small pool) so he rolled back the cover himself and went for a dip...and by the end of his swim somebody had come to remove the cover. Anyway, he had his swim and we both had a great weekend.
I've only given VG for sleep quality because the pillows were knobbly kapok ones and quite lumpy and on the firm side; We had four and they were all the same. So if you're really fussy about a good pillow bring your own.

Room Tip: Enquire about whether there is a wedding and ask for a room some distanced from the main house. Don...

We've stayed in all manner of hotels & rarely feel compelled to review them, but we felt we had to say how outstanding & welcoming the Highgate House staff were, particularly the Night Manager on Reception last night. Super friendly & helpful!
Even from the point of booking the Reception were extremely accommodating in trying to work a solution for our family with young children for the night (too many light sleepers to share a family room, but no interconnecting rooms, so they worked out which rooms shared a corridor with a common locked door to provide us with a self contained area). In fact, every member of staff we encountered was friendly & pleasant. The rooms were pleasant and clean, the food was good & reasonably priced (something like £8.50 for a dish that had a decent sized seabass fillet - that's pretty darn reasonable!), pool was warm... We actually enquired about staying another night but reality filtered through and we really did have to be heading home after several days travelling around. Extremely good value for our family - we've committed it to memory for future use!

We attended a great wedding here, service really good and food excellent. What let it down and was really 3* at best were the rooms. Rather cramped, very hot with no a/c and a slightly musty smell in the bathroom. Overall I've given fur due to the lovely venue itself and great service.

We had our wedding here in march 2012 (I couldn't go back that far on the list!). I have to say that the staff were amazing, they did absolutely everything perfectly and exactly how we wanted it.

The venue was beautiful, we even had sun. They alleviated so much of the worry and stress that a wedding day can entail, it was smooth and professional and we could just relax and enjoy and know that everything was taken care of. The honeymoon suite is gorgeous. The surroundings were fab for photos too!

Would highly recommend and could go on and on with what was great!
