“Beautiful relaxing break”
Reviewed 6 August 2014 via mobile

We stayed 4 nights in a deluxe room with amazing views of the harbour. Room 103 is across the boat slipway and not in the hotel building. Although the path needs flat heeled shoes, staff on reception were most accommodating in looking after mine as I changed into high heeled sandals each night!
Breakfasts were very good with lots of choice, well cooked, although a bit of a wait for hot food. Although we found the portion size at dinner ample we did feel the choice was a little restricted when staying longer than a weekend. When I asked when would there be a change to the menu I was told every few weeks and no offer to cook alternative dishes was made. When plaice "ran out" we were offered smoked haddock , but my husband had eaten that at breakfast! Having said that food was good and beautifully presented.
The area is of outstanding beauty and we were happy to walk the coastal paths from the hotel on two days. Not all rooms have a view so it is worth checking at the time of booking if you are not upgrading to a more expensive room, also be aware not all deluxe rooms are in the main hotel.
We found all the staff to be helpful and pleasant at all times.

Many thanks for taking the time to post your review. It's great to read how much you enjoyed your stay. As you point out, the Hotel is set over several buildings, with rooms of each category in each building and as the hotel is set on the slipway of the harbour and the ground is uneven in some areas on the public footpaths, so it can be tricky in heels, I'm told! But, there is always someone on hand to lend a helping arm to lean on and assist. Throughout the year we change our menu so we are able to offer the best of current, seasonal Cornish produce available at the time, however should any of our guests be staying longer and find the menu restricting, let us know with 24 hours notice, we will gladly order in any specific requests for you. Thanks again for posting and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

A wonderful secluded boutique hotel. Excellent menu and dining facilities. Gorgeous hiking trails. Rooms are refurbished and furnished to a very high standard. Friendly and helpful staff. Wish we could have stayed a week.

We just finished a 6 day holiday at the Lugger Hotel in Portloe, overall it was a fantastic holiday with very few negatives.
Portloe itself is a picture post card fishing village, it boast one hotel, one pub and that is it , no shops , no petrol station nothing. So if you are looking for a complete get away from it all location then this is for you.
Our iPad worked ( most of the time ) through the hotel wifi but my other iPad with 3G and our mobiles wouldn't work , until we drove approx 5 miles from the hotel
NB - the last few miles to the hotel are not for the faint hearted, supposedly two way , at times there was just enough room for the car to get through , we spent a lot of time reversing to allow traffic pass and visa versa
The hotel has a fantastic setting , right on the waters edge, from earlier reviews we asked for room 202 which has a view directly over the harbour, stunning view
The rooms aren't cheap, ours was Stg 205 on a B & B basis but worth it if you want to spoil yourselves.
The hotel had a lovely terrace but this was washed away in last winters storms , hopefully it should be repaired for next year
The breakfasts were the highlight of the food end of things , the service was on the slow side but the selection of food was first class, all cooked fresh and served to your table, freshly made porridge, fry, eggs scrambled or Benedict , smoked haddock , kippers and boiled eggs / soldiers, you couldn't fault it
At the other end We felt the dinner wasn't of the same standard, we ate on the first night but then skipped the dinner until the last night, the main reason was that the portions were ridiculously small , I left the table feeling hungry
A lovely touch was every night when we went to the room there was two mugs with drinking chocolate sachets for us to make up, and on leaving there was a little travel gift of sweets and bottled water to help us on our way
The staff overall were very pleasant and helpful with one specific exception, which to me spoiled all the good work done by the other staff throughout our stay.
Because of the remoteness of the location we read for hours each day and as a result both our kindle readers ran out of power. I asked at reception ( female manager , dark hair ) would anyone have a charger or could she ask, I was met with a wall of total indifference / lack of interest which came as a total shock. To me a hotel of this standard should try to make guest stays as pleasant as possible and to try to sort out any problems / issues that do arise from time to time.
This contrasted sharply from what happened us the next day, we went to lunch in a hotel in nearby St Mawes - The Idle Rocks and while there I put the same question to the person at reception .
The reaction couldn't have been more different , leave it with me and I will see what I can do - within 10 minutes he had tracked down a charger and sorted out both Kindles for us -
Now that is 5 star service ! ( as was the lunch )
Lugger Hotel , take note

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am sorry that you had a couple of niggles during your stay, which had they been avoided would have made it a truly perfect one. We have a wide selection of chargers for electronic gadgets, so I am sorry if your request was not handled correctly as this should have been sorted for you. We take on board your comments in regards to portion sizes on our menu, Head Chef and I will look into this. We do hope we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back again soon and thank you again for posting.

I was booked into The Lugger as my cousin was getting married there, well in the church next door. Richard is a wonderful Manager along with all his staff. Our room was lovely & a pop up bed was set up for my daughter. We had a gorgeous terrace that over looked beautiful cottages & the sea. The personal touches were lovely- hot chocolate with marshmallows, jar full of sweets, fresh fruit & a little goodie bag when we checked out. The wedding couldn't have gone better- smooth & flawless.
It was my 1st time to Cornwall & I'd love to visit The Lugger & have Richard look after me again.

This is a wonderful hotel in a secluded Cornish fishing port. The ambiance is good, the rooms tastefully furnished and the meals of a very high standard. I thoroughly recommend it and look forward to returning there. I was particularly taken with the fine dining which utilises locally caught sea food.

What a lovely peaceful hotel set in a pretty little Cornish village, which also has a great pub. We were upgraded and had a room with a little patio which had the full afternoon sun and a wonderful view over the little harbour. The food was wonderful too and the staff all very pleasant and well trained. Great for walking and no phone signal so peace!!!

Stayed here for one night en route to Falmouth.

Pro's : Beautiful location, very helpful and friendly staff, nice sized clean room with reasonable facilities.

Cons: Hidden extra charges, we were charged a dining room reservation fee of £9, despite having a Dinner, bed and breakfast deal ! Where did they think we were going to eat our included dinner, in the car park ? ! Meals overpriced and portions very small. Evening meal was ok but nothing special given the price, for breakfast I had smoked haddock and scrambled egg, the piece of smoked haddock was approx 4cm square !
Finally, I appreciate that you cannot choose you fellow guests, but I don't think I've ever stayed anywhere with such a high proportion of conceited individuals.

Room Tip: Make sure you get an internet deal, standard room price is way too much

We are sorry to read that you did not enjoy your meals during your stay, but please be assured that we take all feedback seriously so we are able to continually monitor our services and menus and improve where necessary to ensure guest satisfaction. Please note we do not charge a reservation fee for dining in our Restaurant.
