Cornish bargain break between Bodmin and Wadebridge
Review of Trehellas House
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Aug 2023
Cornish Bargain Break was excellent value for our 2 day birthday celebration. Nice to have a summer weight duvet. Good menu for dinner with enough choice as it was the same menu both days. Good location for tourism in eastern Cornwall. Helpful, cheerful staff and manager.

The Trehellas country House felt an unusual place to stay - it was basically a country hotel with an annex in the middle of nowhere! Close by in the hamlet of Washaway was Pencarrow house and gardens (I jogged through them one morning but we did not visit ) and outside is a Celtic stone cross. Our room was small but well furnished with a comfortable bed (5 foot), tea and coffee facilities, hair drier, good wif-fi and a flat screen TV. Better; it had a good sized bathroom with a bath! We ate there in the evening and food was very tasty (if a bit pricey) but the service took 45 minutes from ordering to delivery to our table. Breakfast in the morning was delightful in a large open conservatory. We paid £115 for bed and breakfast.

We just spent a really wonderful weekend here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It's a peaceful and historic building, with cosy lounges, flagstones and leather sofas and quiet gardens and a pool. We stayed in the Courtroom Suite which was spacious, comfortable and quirky. The bed was really comfortable and the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was really good and the location was ideal to explore some really fantastic places in Cornwall. It was sunshine and showers, but what a great place to snuggle up in between our adventures. We went on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, drove over the moors via Blisland to Bude to see friends and then headed down to Fowey for the morning. It' close to Camel Valley Vineyard and Pencarrow. We'd definitely love to stay again.

This was a last minute stay for us and as we couldn't get into our usual place, we decided to try this hotel. We stayed on a Cornish Bargain Break and it was incredible value for money, £290 for two nights for two of us on a 3 course dinner, plus half a bottle of wine each and breakfast deal. The food is excellent and we couldn't fault dinner or breakfast which was serviced in the conservatory.

The room really did need some TLC and by looking at the other pictures on this site, it can't have been decorated for over 10 years. The carpet was very tired and the pictures were so faded you didn't really know what they were of! A lick of paint, new carpet and some decent blackout curtains would make a big difference. I would also pain all the orange pine too just to bring it up to date. There was only one small bottle of shower gel and shampoo so my tip is take your own.

It was a very hot spell when we stayed, as a result we had all our windows open and as we were in 'The Barn' right next to the road it was very noisy. It did go quiet from around 11.30 to 6 am and to be fair, when you close all the glazing, it was quiet but this was impossible due to the heat. So take some ear plugs.

We would definitely stay on the same break again as the staff and the food made up for the less attractive bedroom.

A nice enough hotel although a little isolated. Very good breakfast and a gourmet dinner menu alas at gourmet prices. Accommodation was very average which for vthe price was a bit disappointing. We stayed in a Barn conversion that although adequate and a good size had not been completed to a very high standard. It was also spoilt by people in the room below smoking pot that drifted upwards.

Room tip: Avoid the barn conversion if you can. Breakfast was really good. Alas Bodmin seemed to offer little in the way of good eating places.

We booked a last minute overnight to this hotel. It’s a lovely little place but there were a few things that could be improved. On arrival, we had to wait in Reception for someone to turn up. We were then shown to our room in one of the outer buildings and found that it wasn’t quite as expected or as booked. I understand it was the last room available but we’d specifically asked for a bath and there wasn’t one. The room was ok, but quite dated.

We ate it in the restaurant and whilst the food was great, there was one young lady serving by herself and she could’ve used some help. We had the bouillabaisse and it came with the tiniest amount of bread, we asked for more and the tiniest amount came. Small thing but easily remedied. The menu was comprehensive but the drinks options limited.

We slept ok but not great.

Breakfast was ok and oddly there were three times as many staff than at dinner. The cooked options were great but the buffet had been obliterated by other guests and wasn’t replenished.

Probably won’t return but not overpriced and a nice location for a mini break.

Room tip: A few steps to the main entrance, not sure if it’s wheelchair accessible
