Reviewed 11 April 2012

My family booked a birthday dinner recently and all I can say is that the whole place is amateur. The decor is tacky and is like walking into a time warp but I suppose that is just personal taste.

However, the food service was painfully slow and one of our main courses never arrived at all! The prices were horrendous and didn't represent value for money.

I kept expecting Gordon Ramsey to pop out doing one of his Kitchen Nightmare shows!

When we complained to the management they were sooooooo snooty words can't explain. They tried to argue that we hadn't actually ordered the main course even though we had ordered it medium rare!!

I wouldn't recommend and wouldn't go again!

The family member who booked this birthday dinner obviously didn't share your opinion of 'tacky' otherwise wouldn't have chosen our hotel to celebrate this occasion, therefore I am sorry to hear that you felt this way.
I am not aware of any complaint or problem that you have mentioned in your review,so it is difficult to make any comment regarding this.
Everyone's opinion of 'value for money' will always be different depending on their expectations,if you expect fresh, home made good quality produce then our prices certainly reflect value for money,if on the other hand fast, mass produced processed and frozen foods are more to your taste then I could see why you would feel this way.
I am sorry to hear that you Have chosen not to recommend our restaurant to anyone as many guests return time and time again which we feel is a reflection on enjoyment and satisfaction.

We had our wedding at Van Dyk's on Easter Monday having booked the hotel back in July 2011. The staff at the hotel were very obliging and put on a fantastic day for us, where everything ran like clockwork. They were unobtrusive and very efficient and kept everything moving in line with our plans.
Before the wedding they had allowed us to sample the menu choices for the day, so that we could make a more informed judgement, to pick the best options for our party. In the end we had only positive comments from our guests about the food that was provided in the main meal and also in the buffet.
Nothing seemed like too much trouble and both Angela & Natalie did everything we asked of them.
If I had to provide some more critical comment I would say that some of our guests did say that the bar prices seemed a little expensive especially for he kids soft drinks.
However overall I can't imagine that we could have had a better day anywhere else for a similar cost

Wonderful food, great atmosphere and attentive staff, I have just read some of the trip advisor comments and cannot understand people, if you want 'fast food' at cheap prices, then your local pub is just the ticket, if you want a night out, with fantastic food in a beautiful building, then van dyks is the place

Thank you for your positive review,we pride ourselves on good fresh food,in busy times the speed in which the food gets to the table can sometimes take a little longer than in less busy times, this is only to be expected when all the food is cooked fresh to order,we never sell frozen or pre made foods.
I hope that all who read these reviews will give our hotel a try and then make their own decision and maybe like yourself post a review to let future guests know how good we are.thank you once again and we all hope to see you again very soon.

Attended a wedding this weekend and having paid a ridiculous ammount for our room we thought the hotel would be of a high standard....how wrong were we! After sending our breakfast back due not being un-cooked all four of us have been ill and the One waiter on in the breakfast area clearly couldnt cope. £7.00 for a glass of Rose wine...make sure you have plenty in your wallet!!!

I am sorry to hear that you thought £109 was too much for you to pay for a room for 2 people including 2 breakfasts, there are always cheaper options not to far away from us that people do use sometimes.I spoke with the waiter you mentioned who was on duty for breakfast,he is in fact our restaurant manager who is also a qualified chef, you complained of the sausages on your breakfast not being cooked to which you were told that they were cooked but they were taken away without being eaten off all 4 plates, you were offered exra bacon instead which you accepted, with 40 other breakfasts that morning all of which had full breakfasts including sausages it seems maybe that your statement of you all being ill was just a malicious one.

Friends had recommended this venue but unfortunately did not live up to expectations. Booked for 8.30 but the table wasn't ready. Had been promised a round table but this wasn't available. We were given the wrong menu and we were only shown the specials as order was being taken. Two out of the eight starters were not ready and the main course was not served until 10.30. Five out of the eight meals were lukewarm; only the meals served with chips were hot. The staff were friendly but inexperienced. The Head Waiter was inattentive. Overall a very disappointing experience which we won't be repeating.

We had intended to enjoy a meal to celebrate my birthday on the 28th February and take advantage of a free bottle of wine offer, but due to illness we were unable to go. As my husband still wanted to treat me he suggested we go for Sunday Lunch today. We hadn't booked and were directed to the bar to wait until a table was prepared. It only took a minute or two - we didn't have time to order drinks - before our table was ready. The staff were very friendly and efficient when taking our order and we didn't have long to wait before our food was presented to us. Mackerel for my husband and Pea and Mint Soup for myself. Both were delicious although I felt the soup could have been a little warmer.

The main course of Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding was ordered for both of us. The presentation was excellent as was the Roast Beef, Yorkshire Pudding, many vegetables - although cooked al dente the broccoli and cauliflower hardly having touched the boiled water - new and roast potatoes. There couldn't have been a better selection. My only disappointment was that it was all cold, gravy included even the plate it was served on. What a disappointment after such tasty and well presented food. Our first visit too - what a let down. I was expecting someone to come and ask if everything was ok as they had done on our first course and would have mentioned this fact, but no one came.

Also something which I found quite strange and I have never experienced before in my 40 years of dining out was someone vaccuming round vacated tables next to guests who were still eating. I can see why it was done, but is that really etiquette for the remaining guests? I found it very disturbing.

On complaining it was suggested we should have mentioned our disappointment earlier although I felt the staff were putting more emphasis in cleaning up for the next guests. It was also suggested if we returned we need to request vegetables to be cooked longer.

In view of this we were offered a complimentary sweet or coffee but declined. Would we re-visit? Not sure although the Roast Beef was to die for and there was plenty of it. I did request a doggy bag to take it home but had to sign a form first!

I live nearby and venues for a good value Sunday Lunch are few and far between and I have visited many!

Thank you for visiting our hotel please accept my appologies for your disappointment. If your food is not as warm as you would like then it is very important that the staff are told immediately so that we can take it back to the kitchen and replace it, if the food is consumed and then customers complain we are not able to do anything.
Food that is wrapped and taken from the premises either for human or animal consumtion must be signed for as this makes people aware of the storage / re- heating responsibility.
Hoovering is sometimes necessary after some guests / children have left which I am sure you understand and never takes long, (the small sweeper Hoover is very quiet).
Once again I am sorry for your disappointing experience and hope that you will give us another try sometime.

Reviewed 20 February 2012

Stayed 3 nights in Feb on occasion of grand daughters wedding. On arrival I noted the bathroom door did not 'click' shut, it could be pushed open, I reported it to reception Thursday evening. During stay I noted that the room door could sometimes not be locked and when apparently locked, could be forced to open by turning the knob. Again reported but when we checked out on the Sunday nothing had been done.
Room size: an executive room so small we had to ask to have the chair removed to give us room to dress, I have had larger rooms in Travel Inns and less than one third the price.
Positives: staff are wonderfully friendly though they forget requests which I guess is down to training and management.
Finally, not value for money, our 3 nights cost £447, an experience we shall not repeat.

Room Tip: On the first floor the PA system broadcast music until midnight :(
