“So much promise but so little offered”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2014

I had been her before with a very disappointing experience but went to try it after it has reopened following some storm damage - it is on a beach!

Lunch on Friday last week. On a glorious sunny day, at 1 pm there were only 2 people dining - says it all really! The entrance is small lobby and the stairway to the first floor is a domestic type straight run of steps with small blue lights fitted. Not at all impressive and certainly not impressive enough to prepare for the prices in the restaurant. The bar top was covered in glasses, food etc - obviously left over from some when but looked a mess and far from inspiring. I asked for a glass of water as I had walked along the beach.

We were shown to a table and menus were presented - list of food on left and a la carte on right. I asked the only person serving what the menu on the left was and was told it was "fixed price" menu. There were not any prices so I asked him how much it was. He did not know and went to find out. He came back and said it was £15 for 2 courses and £20 for 3. £5 for a starter or dessert is rather heavy in what is still really only a smarted up beach café. The nearby magnificent Chewton Glen 5 start hotel charges £25 for 3 courses! It then transpired that there was a lunch menu which had not been offered previously. We both ordered fish and chips at £8 each and I asked if I could now have the glass of water which I ordered when I entered. The fish was delicious, chips half cooked.

We ordered desserts at £5 each. I ordered summer pudding and was served profiteroles which were corrected.

The service was slow - particularly as there were only 2 other people there. Some more diners did come in for snack lunches. Used glasses and empty water bottles were not removed form our table.

The ground floor is still not open after the storm on 14 February but the glass fronting the balcony has still not been replaced which looks dreadful.

This is still a very disappointing place to eat.

“Fantastic food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014 via mobile

10 of us went for a family dinner - for some it was the first time and others have been a few times - and the food was delicious. We had the set menu, which is not only exceptional value but also has a nice range of choices. Everyone commented on how delicious their respective dishes were and particular favourites were the Serrano ham with mango and the cod with a lemon and garlic sauce. The staff are incredibly welcoming and go out of their way to help. The one minor thing that they need to consider on the set menu is people with allergies, as the menu has limited choice (especially dessert!) for those with a wheat or dairy intolerance.
All in all fantastic food and I'm looking forward to going back again!

“A leisurely repast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

Lunch at The Marine was an all round enjoyable experience: the location, the carefully considered design of the interior, the polite & friendly staff, and above all the excellent cuisine, made it wholly enjoyable. The service was perhaps a little slow, but it meant we experienced a leisurely two & a half hour meal.

“Meal with friends”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

I organised a meal for 39 friends at the Marine on the 16th April . It was a fantastic success. We preordered from a good quality menu and were not disappointed , it was also very good value. The staff were welcoming and the service efficient. What a fantastic location for a summers evening with views over the Isle of Wight and the Solent . A small balcony but we enjoyed Pre dinner drinks on the balcony taking it all in .
We are planning to do this again as everyone enjoyed it so much .
Thank you to everyone at The Marine

“Sunday Lunch.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2014 via mobile

We've been coming back to The Marine since it was opened a few years ago . Have always been pleased. Unfortunately this time we were disappointed . The Sunday lunch was very average and my vegetarian daughter had a stir fry.
This consisted of carrots mushrooms lots of bean sprouts a little pepper and not much else. For £10.00 it simply was a waste of money. We will give The Marine a miss next year.
