Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Located within the New Forest National Park, Hurst Castle is situated on the seaward end of the shingle spit that extends 1.5 miles from Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire. Built by Henry VIII as a chain of fortresses to protect the Solent in 1544, this is the site where Charles I was imprisoned in 1648 before being taken to his trial and execution in London. The castle was modernised during the Napoleonic wars and again in the 1870s when the enormous armoured wings were added, making it the largest coastal fort in the world. Two of the huge 38-ton guns installed in the 1870s can be viewed in their casemates together with other weapons developed through 412 years of military use. During World War II, Hurst was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. You can get to Hurst Castle by ferry from Keyhaven Quay (sat nav postcode: SO41 0TP) or you can walk along the shingle Hurst Spit.

“Beautiful Day Out”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Our party of 6 had such a great day out, some walked from Keyhaven to the Castle and some going on the ferry. We had a look round the Castle which is beautiful at any time of year but particularly lovely yesterday. We had a fab lunch at the cafe and sat in the grounds and enjoyed our meal then all returned on the ferry

We have visited Keyhaven and The Castle many times and always enjoy it.

“Loved it!”
Reviewed 5 August 2014 via mobile

We visited Hurst Castle after a long beach walk to get there, which my 6yr old son enjoyed to our surprise!
The castle is amazing and full of history dating back hundreds of years.
There are so many places to investigate that you could spend hours here. My son absolutely loved it,finding dark passageways and stairways to the amazing views in every direction.
We had lunch in the castle and enjoyed it very much too!
But by far the best part was hiding in dark rooms with my son and scaring the life out of his mum.
An absolutely fabulous place to visit and with the relaxing boat ride back, just a great day was had by all! Thank you Hurst Castle.

“Great place to visit”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We took the ferry from Keyhaven over to Hurst Castle on a beautiful sunny, hot July day. The views from all angles were terrific! Some of the displays were a touch dated but that did not spoil our visit, in fact it made a change to just be able to amble around and investigate without fear of getting in the way of others.
May I say that the cafe did excellent food, high recommendations for the ploughmans and the cakes.
If in the area do find time to visit.

“Lovely afternoon out - would love to spend more time here!”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

Unfortunately we only had about an hour to spend here - but will definitely be returning! There was so much to see and we'll definitely be back.

The ferry ride was fun too!

“History”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

This castle invokes a sense of history going right back to the 1500''s. The boat ride over is a great way to start the day. If you enjoy castles this is one not too miss.
