Tredegar lies close to the top of a South Wales valley where coal, once king, is no more. Evidence of the town's industrial and hence economic decline lies all around. The Cambrian is set in the town centre close to a roundabout dominated by a clock tower dedicated to Wellington. Only the Cambrian on one side and a new Wetherspoon's pub on the other are in decent repair. The former Town Hall is derelict with shrubs growing from its windows as has the closed pub opposite it.

Inside the Inn you will get a warm welcome and be shown to your room rather than handed keys to find it yourself. Car parking at the rear is limited so maybe it's best to park up on the street at the front.

We had room one and it was excellent (management please note that the fire door outside slams noisily when used and should be fixed!). The decor is new and modern with fresh paint on new joinery and plasterwork instead of the 'old inn favourite' of anaglypta and emulsion over old plaster. The bathroom was nicely tiled and had a large shower space with plenty of hot water and good towels to hand. An excellently comfortable bed with a fluffy duvet rounds it off for a good night's sleep. Everything was spotlessly clean, a rarity in old pub b and bs.

The bar room downstairs doubles as dining room. We ate out in the evening so did not sample the pub fare offered. Breakfast was a slow affair with one smiling and polite young lady taking orders, cooking and serving, as well as sorting out departing customers' bills. The food was OK but not outstanding - with fresh produce so readily available using canned tomatoes and supermarket sliced bread comes as a bit of a disappointment.

The inn is something of a gem amidst ruin and it makes a good stop if you are in the vicinity.

Room was clean and comfortable. Good to have separate entrance from the main bar. Car parking at back locked every night. Staff were helpful. Evening food was OK (I didn't have breakfast)

But..... If you are hoping for an early night (before 12 midnight) you're unlikely to get to sleep. If there is a live band (as there was during my visit), the volume levels in the room are very high and the sound very distorted - apparently the speakers are ceiling mounted, and the ceiling of the bar are the floors of the room. Even without the live music, you can hear background music and loud voices. [Rating below reflects this]

I stayed in The Cambrian for 1 night and was very happy, my room was very clean and spacious. The manager and staff were all very helpful with my requests and we all had a good night. There is a bar downstairs and we also had an evening meal, together with breakfast I can say the food was excellent. There is a really good atmosphere and I would recommend this and look forward to staying again.
