Hotel All'Orso is on the outskirts of Biancade near Treviso, a small town in a pleasant semi rural area with some light industry and lots of vineyards close by. The hotel has a large car park, attractive gardens, a small playground and further gardens leading to a river bank.
The hotel is family owned and run and was opened by the current owners father nearly 50 years ago. You can tell that Franco has been brought up in the business, and everything is well managed and thought through. The clientele is a mixture of business customers - mon to thurs - and group tours at weekends together with foreign tourists. Don't let the group tours put you off, when we were there they were Italian pensioners, so no noise or disturbance.
The rooms are spacious and very clean. We had room 111 towards the back and overlooking the side garden, nice and quiet. Beds were comfortable, bathroom looked fairly new with decent shower, no bath.
Breakfast is pretty good, all cold food, nicely presented and a good choice of cereals, fruit, cold meats and cheese, yoghurt and breads/pastries. Coffee is machine, good selection of teas. There is also a toast machine and a machine to do freshly boiled eggs which is a nice touch.
The restaurant does a table d'hôte menu 6 days, closed on Sunday's. This may not suit everyone, but if you are looking for old fashioned home style cooking on a budget, then this is very good value. Our only criticism is that for a longer stay the food does get a bit repetitive, but most people would be happy with the quality and very happy with the price. Prices do get out of date, but as at sep 2012, you pay 13.50 euro for salad hors d'oeuvre (freshly made and good selection), primo - choice of soup or pasta with a drink (wine, beer or water). If you add segundo, typically a choice of grilled meat, then the price is 18.50 euro.
Franco speaks excellent English. Most of the other staff don't speak English, but do have a little English vocabulary, and if you also have a few words of Italian, you should be able to understand most things most of the time.
There are hotel service buses for both Venice and Treviso airports and also to get to a nearby train station to get into Venice.
And if anyone Scottish is reading this, then you will be made especially welcome, as Scotland is Franco's favourite country to visit.
P.S. ignore swimming pool fitness centre ratings, they don't exist, just iPad finger trouble on my part and I can't get rid of them.
