“A hidden gem!”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Each year I visit Italy, I have to spend sometime at Il Borghetto. This summer I decided to spend the whole month of June at Il Borghetto. I needed a tranquil and peaceful place surrounded by the beautiful and majestic Italian countryside, and yet close to Florence, San Casciano and Siena. It is a magical place that transports one to another world.
The main building, which was a farmhouse dating to the 15th century, was beautifully restored by the Cavallini family. Each room is unique and elegantly decorated with Italian antiques.
Do you want to learn how to make pasta? Cristina shows you how and makes it look so simple. It is the best pasta I have ever had, light and tender, topped with Antonio's organic vegetables and herbs from his garden and fresh sauces. No restaurant can match that. What a treat! All that and more are prepared in the superbly equipped large modern kitchen with marble sinks and high ceilings.
Besides the vegetable garden there are fruit trees, apricots, pomegranates, figs, apples and pears. Then, of course, the vineyards and olive groves.
Wine tasting courses are offered too. The Il Borghetto wine is highly rated from Bilaccio, 100% Sangiovese, to Montegiano.
The staff is most friendly and extremely helpful in planning all kinds of trips. You do not have to go far to see ancient monuments, there is an Etruscan tomb dating to the 12th century, right on the property, one of the most ancient in the Etruscan region and is said to be the final resting place of the Archer.
I would like to go back in September-October for the olive and wine harvesting. It is the most wonderful time. You can taste the fresh green olive oil as soon as it is pressed. Wow!
I recommend Il Borghetto any time. It is small, only 9 rooms, charming and most welcoming.

Room Tip: If you are a small family, there is a whole apartment with kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths and beau...

My family and I spent three weeks in France and Italy and this was by far our favorite. It is on a working olive and wine vineyard. The breakfast is amazing, everything is homemade. The staff is absolutely lovely and warm. The views from the rooms are stunning, and there are Roman ruins right on the property. The meals they make are delicious, with fantastic tomato sauces and wine and traditional Italian dishes. We can't wait to come back!

I was married here on June 14, 2014. The experience was amazing in so many ways. The food is extremely fresh, homemade pastas and vegetables from the garden. Better than most restaurants in italy! The service and staff are extremely helpful and provide everything to make your stay perfect. The rooms were very spacious and the decor felt cozy. The countryside view and pool topped off the stay and added to the relaxing atmosphere. Absolutely loved the wine tour and tasting and I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to experience ultimate relaxation!

Room Tip: Every room is amazing, spacious, and cozy!

We love this beautiful and relaxing house in the country. Delightful hosts, delicious breakfast with fruits, homemade jams and cake in the morning. Surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees and in close vicinity to the city of Florence and the Chianti wine region. This place feels like a second home to us and we are already looking forward to come back !

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful.

I’ll start with the positives. Il Borgetto is a nice quiet place in the area of Chianti. Every room has a different, cosy décor and the bed was very confortable. Breakfast came with nice home-made cake and fresh figs and for extra fee you can get a very nice strong cappuccino.
On the other hand, I found few member of staff /owners very unfriendly. The walls here are very thin so we could hear noise from the kitchen and also our neighbours from our bathroom. Furthermore, they don’t do late check-in. Because of our flight we would only arrive to Il Borgetto at around 11pm so we were advised right away to stay for a night elsewhere. Finally, we had difficulties to find this place, because the sign was hidden behind the bushes.
All in all, I think Il Borghetto is quite overpriced for what they offer and I wouldn’t come back.

...could have been better!

The place is well located for tours in the Chianti, the buildings are nice, our room very spacious and overall nicely furnished in country-side style. The pool area is ok. Staff were generally kind, with the exception of Cristina who was really a pleasant, helpful, joyful and careful person.

On the "not-so-positive" side there were:

- no dinner/tasting experience on-site: despite the fact the website indicates options for cooking classes, own vegetable/oil etc production and you would expect something happening around this, nothing happens. True that the website says dinners are to be booked but when we arrived there were no mentions on the possibilities, no offers of local wine, oil tasting etc. We did not ask as we soon discovered that the place is essentially "dead" after 8pm, if not before.

- breakfast: breakfast was ok, but not great. For 180€/night maybe a little more choice would have been appreciated (i.e. mixed fresh fruit salad, fresh orange juice, scrambled or boiled eggs, croissants, ham). The list of additional breakfast menu appeared on our table the third day, and anyway was definitely too expensive for the place and the overall offer.

- water in the room: we had 2 bottles of water in the fridge, but once finished they were never replaced (we stayed there 5 nights). Needless to say that it was not possible to buy anything from the place after 8pm because everything was closed. Also (during the day) choice of drinks was very limited (to add that they were very kind in asking us what we liked for the next day....but as we were touting the region almost all the time it was a bit difficult to say if we would have ever needed a drink the following day).

- room facilities: despite we agree with an eco-friendly policy the lack of air-conditioning could be sometimes a small problem. During the night it tended to be a bit too hot, despite the ceiling fans (and anyway I am not sure it costs less to have the fans on during the whole day also when we were not there - and we switched them off before leaving our room - vs. a few hours of air-cond, when necessary)

swimming pool: nice spot (could be better), but worn-out lounges and water rather dirty!

Il Borghetto is what anyone who comes to Tuscany would expect. Perfectly ensconced in a working vineyard & olive groves, the property is beyond beautiful. As you enter, the air hangs heavy with the fragrance of the flora, an intoxicating blend of rosemary bushes which circle the main house and lavender in full bloom. There are a few rooms, all of which have been uniquely decorated and shows off the good taste of the Cavallini patron. However, for a real treat, stay in room 9. This is a stand alone suite,a few steps away from the main house. It is a gorgeous room, sumptuously decked and has its own private terrace facing the groves. My partner and I enjoyed very much being able to walk the grounds and the pool was a refreshing respite given the intense summer weather. Breakfast is a relatively simple affair, which is fine especially since whichever cake or tart the cook makes is absolutely delicious! Some of the best things about staying here are: you're less than 20mins drive away from Florence, amazing Siena is under an hour's drive, you can drive around all over the Chianti Classico area and explore the many gastronomic options (just look out for the fork & spoon road signs). Also, there is a lovely small place called Casa Mia,about 10mins drive from Il Borghetto which serves really good rustic Tuscan fair. The first night we went, we had rabbit ragout pasta and fresh porcini tagliatelle, amongst other dishes. They were all so good that we went back the next day!
