Ask which room has a view, terrace or a tub. Every room has a very different configuration and many look into courtyards. Some also have a private soaking tub and balcony.

Book with a reputed travel agent like Andrew Harper. It is the way to get the best room and service.

The hotel buildings are inconspicuous from the outside, but easy to find thanks to the neighboring prominent church. Pedestrian Pyrgos may seem like a maze but there are no dead ends and all streets lead to the top of the hill, so the hotel is the easiest spot to find once you have seen it.

For first time arrivals, call the hotel to get picked up from the port or the airport. It is priced fairly at around 20 euro and a donkey will carry your luggage through the hilly pedestrian zone (about 200m). The man guiding the donkey is so very sweet.

Breakfast is outstanding - go for the Greek option. Fresh pastry, light delicate cheeses, outstanding yoghurt with fruit and honey. Compared to the North European specimen, the local cucumber is charged with flavour. Personally that's something I have not experienced outside the Greek islands.

But the ability to have all this while surveying two coasts and the vineyards deep below under a balmy morning breeze is reinvigorating. This was our first vacation in months and I was recharged over the first breakfast. I found this place so energizing that later in the day I decided to light up a cigar even though I never smoke, just to digest it all.

The staff certainly play a huge role in this. Always pleasant, smiling and able to hold conversation. Languages are spoken, history is known, advice given is up to date, orders arrive quickly, reservations likewise and rooms are cleaned thoroughly and on time. All with kindness. A classy group, and representative of the best you can expect on the island. Do take the time to talk to them, they are actually interesting people. This would be my first reason for staying at the Zannos.

Some bathrooms are decorated with thick marble fabricated by a local artist. The interior walls, like all around the island, are hand painted in Venetian plaster. It feels so good to look at it, you'll miss it the moment you leave. Sink and shower hardware is done in brass and bronze. Solid look and feel everywhere you turn.

Stone floors, vaulted ceilings, thick walls and wooden window shutters provide effective heat control. Our air conditioning worked perfectly fine and to be honest was usually not necessary in early September.

This is a strong advantage of Pyrgos - unlike the 'cooking pots' of the coastal towns, Pyrgos benefits from a cooler breeze.

The town is the ideal refuge from the crowds but unjustly so. The hillside views are just as dramatic as the cliffs in Oia or Fira. Here you can enjoy them in solitude. Its restaurants and cafes are authentic: local recipes, ingredients and best tasting food. Its central location is no further than a 45 minutes' drive away from anywhere else on the island. Oia is usually a 35 minutes' drive. Parking is easy in Pyrgos.

Driving is intuitive as there is only one road to each destination. Keep your distance from the picture snapping tourist forgetting to use the indicator lights. Santorini is scarily photogenic.

The hotel is at the highest point of Prygos. But believe me it is worth the walk up those steps. The hotel was great. The rooms were great. The views were even better. But you know what the best part of our stay was? The staff. Igor, Joanna, & Sakis they became like friends. They honestly couldnt do enough to make you comfotable and happy. The best staff ive ever come across. Thank you one and all.

The hotel is situated at the highest point in Pyrgos, a lovely picturesque little village, with amazing views of Santorini. We stayed at the Zannos Melathron hotel for nine nights during August, it was our last stop on a trip celebrating our wedding anniversary. The hotel building has a long history and the original house is charming and full of character. The rooms are all different, we had the Rita room which is in an origial cave house with our own jacuzzi tub and terrace area (perfect for private sunbathing). The room was very clean and house keeping was excellent (even dropping off more fresh towels and water each evening). Breakfast is good with lots to choose from on the menu. However what makes this hotel is the staff. I can honestly say that I have never met more friendly people, especially Joanna, Sakis, Igor and Pannos, nothing was too much trouble and they treat you like one of the family. We were sad to say goodbye to them and cannot thank them enough for making our stay so enjoyable. We had such an amazing time and would definitely return.
