“A Protestant piece of life”

Musee du Protestantisme Dauphinois

Attraction details
Owner description: The Museum of Dauphinois Protestantism in the temple in Le Poet-Laval (one of the few early protestant temples that survived the 'revocation of the Edict of Nantes' which removed protestant rights in France) has artefacts looking at the historic persecution of protestants in the region. The temple probably started life as a residence of one of the knights Hospitalier and then in the 15th century became the village hall before being converted into a protestant temple in 1622. Internally only the galleries retain their 14th century appearance. The central pulpit and pews which form a circle were added in 1860. The temple is a rare example of Protestant church dating from before the 19th century. As well as being a museum it is occasionally still used as a church. The Museum is the starting point of the European hiking route " In the footsteps of the Huguenots " hiking trail whose journey of about 1600 km, follows the path of exile of the Huguenots to the countries of Refuge, trough Switzerland up to Bad Karlshafen in the Northern Germany.

“A Protestant piece of life”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

In this magical village, discover one of the two last historical protestant church in France. All the other have been destroyed after "Edit de Nantes" revocation in 1685. In this little place, you can imagine how the congregation gathered and listened to the pastors preach. Fixed to the old pulpit, you will notice a hourglass : Protestant preaches could be (too?) long ! The museum all around is quite interesting for a better understanding of the Protestant way of life and the reason why they left through the surroundings mountains in the XVII and XVIII th centuries.

“An unknown part of French history”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

It was interesting to learn about this early protestant movement (which I had never heard about). Unfortunately, everything was in French.

“This was fascinating for us due to personal reasons”
Reviewed 4 July 2012

If you have a protestant back ground and you are interested in history this is a place to start. There is now a sort of walkway established which shows the plight of the Huguenots. Some of the names are in a register.
