“Lovely small independent hotel with outstanding restaurant”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

A quality hotel in a remote and often missed part of France. All the rooms are individual and vary a lot. They are scattered around a number of different buildings so best to tell the hotel your likes and dislikes when booking.

Food in the restaurant is fantastic and reasonably priced for the quality. Go for the top priced menu, you won't regret it. Also, be sure to stick around for breakfast on the roof terrace in the morning. Its the best part of the day in high summer and again, the homemade pastries and bread are superb.

Room Tip: All the rooms are individual. Tell the receptionist what is important to you when you book.

We stayed three nights with the family in july 2013. Poet Laval is a amazing beautiful place and we returned to the hotel-restaurant Les Hospitaliers for at least the fifth time in 13 years. Thirteen years ago we also stayed in the hotel. The other previous visits we only had dinner. The food was again amazing. The hotel however was rather overpriced, noisy and in lack of a proper shower. If you decided to stay at the hotel try to get one of the rooms in the apartment building next to the hotel. The ones that have a garden and are connected to the pool. The views, location and again the food is wonderful. The restaurant personnel amazingly friendly.

Room Tip: see my general comment for a good choice.

This is really a hotel stay we will remember! First and foremost because of the location: a genuine mediaeval castle on a hilltop with a marvelous view. Walking around the castle and the old village surrounding it was a real treat. The hotel itself was very good; we had a spacious room with a beautiful bathroom. Finally, the restaurant was perfect for rounding off the day.

We'll certainly return if we are ever in the area again.

Room Tip: We had a superior room at little extra cost; we recommend that.

Hotel very easy to find
Room rustic and clean fab views
Dinner probably one of the best dinners I have ever had the chef is a genious
The owner who looked after us recommends wine to go with what you are eating and he knows his stuff
Bed slightly uncomfortable but that was probably our fault as we ate far too much but didn't want to waste it as it tasted fab
Breakfast perfect good bread and pastries coffee and juice

Room Tip: The room we had, had a lovely terrace looking over the pool and the views were amazing

After a long drive south we arrived at les Hospitaliers we were given a choice of two rooms -neither were large both were clean but with very small bathrooms ( neither were cheap-circa 145 euros .
After a cramped shower we took the stairs up to the dining room and given a table overlooking the hills and the pool it seemed very nice .

After that it rather fell apart as the manner of service and that offered was very poor .The two set menus were not appetising so we chose to go a la carte -a big mistake as a meagre starter of chicken livers on a salad was 32euros and an overcooked monk fish main course was 36 euros .

All in all a very poor and overpriced meal .

So my advice would be not to take the complicated, narrow and tortuous route up to this hotel and find another in this region

Room Tip: do not go elsewhere

The hotel is situated in a pcturesque village on a hill. Our room was small but adequate with a lovely view. Bathroom was excellent; it looked fairly new. Breakfast was not lavish, but very good. The hotel restaurant served most excellent meals, no need to look for another.

Loved our stay here very quaint medieval village, the hotel and swimming pool have commanding views of the hills and countryside. Hotel staff extremely polite and pleasant. We had to change rooms as the hotel was fully booked and we wanted to stay extra nights a good testament to the hotel and its location. Our first room was in the main hotel, small clean nice bathroom with a balcony view. The other room was more private away from the hotel much larger and equally nice.(no view not as modern however well maintained) We did not eat at the hotel, expensive "fine dining" is not what we are about. Montelimar is quite a drive but easy to get to we, ate there each evening. A small possible downside, it is a tourist area for the medieval buildings located in the village, the numbers are not excessive and to us they did create a pleasant atmosphere.
