“Excellent B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 November 2012

We decided to go to St Arnaud (instead of another town which shall remain unnamed). We regretfully spent only one night at St Arnaud House B&B with Russell and Margery.

The reception was warm, and the evening we spent chatting with our hosts was very enjoyable. The bed was comfortable, the room exceptionally tastefully decorated, and everything was just perfect. Breakfast the following morning was top-class.

Without any hesitance we would tell our best friends to stay at Russell & Margery's delightful St Arnaud House B&B.

If there was one thing that would have improved this B&B even more, it would have been a view of the lake. But the excellent companionship of our hosts more than made up for that little "disadvantage." On the other hand, being in amongst the trees makes their home a very good place to watch birds, and my wife spent quite some time chatting to Margery about all the birds that come to their bird feeder.

We ill most definitely go to St Arnaud House B&B again... and again... and again...

Thank you for your endorsement of St Arnaud House, it is much appreciated.
St Arnaud House is set amongst the native beech trees, Wake up to the birdsong of the Bellbird and Tui, We are just a pleasant bush stroll of approx 600 metres to the lovely lake Rotoiti, situated in the heart of the Nelson lakes National Park NZ.

We stayed 2 nights from 22 March 2012 at St Arnaud House B&B. It was raining when we arrived just after lunch so we spent a very nice afternoon chatting to Margery and getting to know the lovely pets. The next day was sunny and so we did some walks around the beautiful Lake Rotoiti and visited the Tophouse Historic Hotel for a drink on the verandah. As other guests have indicated, you won’t find better hosts than Russell & Margery.

We ate at the local restaurant on the first night which was good and on the second night enjoyed a delicious meal and drinks with our charming hosts. We then spent a wonderful evening with them, chatting for hours. The breakfasts were hearty and delicious. Margery also went to extra trouble to ensure that all the food served for my wife was gluten free as she suffers from Coeliacs Disease.

We had the room on the ground floor which was very clean, cosy and comfortable. It would have been great to stay another night but it was towards the end of our trip and we had to make it down to Christchurch to fly home. It would be fantastic to stay at St Arnaud in the winter and we would certainly stay at the St Arnaud House B&B if we come back then.

We stopped one night at St Arnaud, and had one of our best times in New Zealand. Russel & Margery are such wonderful hosts! We spend a very nice evening with them, starting by a chat around a glass of wine. We had a great dinner together, and very pleasant conversations and cultural exchanges
The room was very cosy and nice. We love wood, so a wooden house and bathroom was great! The garden is so beautiful! We love nature, so we could exchange with Margery about how plants support differents environments.
Next morning, we had a great and delicious breakfast.
We would really have liked to stay here longer. We will certainly stay here again if we are around.

My husband and I together with another couple stayed with Russell and Margery and have to say it was a very cosy and warm. It was raining when we arrived and we were immediately offered coffee etc. Russell made the best coffee with his machine and I had a warming hot chocolate. The weather cleared and we made for the lake and did a great walk through the bush. It started to rain again and we went back to the B & B and the 4 of us agreed that if we had to be anywhere in the rain this was the most perfect place - warming fire, comfort lounges, great conversation with Russell and of course their lovely dog. Margery cooked us a delicious dinner. I also found Margery's quilt making very interesting and their Garden was beautiful. Would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Room Tip: Because we had friends travelling with us we gave them the room with a large bedroom - our bathroom...

Russell & Marjorie are truly the B&B Kings & Queens!!!
We used their beautiful home as a base while conducting the "Travers-Sabine Loop" tramp. (4 nights)
We arrived after doing the Abel Tasman (kayaking / tramping for a week) and much to our delight Marjorie went out of her way to make our adventures that little more comfortable by doing all our washing! This luxury cannot be understated!
Russell on the other hand was amazing!
He knows pretty well everyone in the region & is even in the local Search & Rescue Services. As such he lent us his own EPIRB and set us up with a "Notice of Intentions" (DOC) documentation as well as getting us water taxis and vehicle transport.
Put in a nutshell, nothing was too much trouble!
And the food!!!! My goodness, The Food!
In addition to truly 5-Star breakfasts & barista coffees on call (Made by Russell!) we took liberty in also being provided amazing evening meals at a very reasonable additional cost which in the scheme of things, was basically an investment in our wellbeing!

For the slightly increased cost as compared to backpackers, St Arnaud House, is THE place to stay! (No matter what your activities!) A truly beautiful home and a beautiful family!

My husband and I live in Arizona, USA. We made a reservation the day before and ended up staying an extra night. Our hosts go above and beyond. They are so helpful and friendly and the food!!! Margery's food was the best we'd had on our 16 day New Zealand visit. I highly, highly recommend St. Arnaud house. You cannot get any better. Thanks again Russell and Margery We WILL see you again. Cheers---Scott and Leslie
