“Peaceful break in a luxurious cottage”

Orledge End is a beautiful holiday cottage which caters for your every need. The pictures don't do it justice!
What you can't see from the pictures is that every possible essential (or not so essential) household appliance/ equipment has been provided for you making it feel like you're staying at home rather than making do with the bare minimum kitchenware etc, as we were expecting. We don't often stay in self catering accommodation, but feel like we may have been spoilt now! The owners really have gone that extra mile to make sure your every need is catered for.

The setting is peacefully rural- don't expect to be able to wander to a shop or pub- but doesn't feel too isolated and a very simple 30 min route takes you into the heart of Edinburgh.

The decor is modern but the place still has bags or character and charm and the facilities are of a very high standard- great power showers!

If you're looking for a quiet break in a beautiful cottage, stay here!

Orlege end is spectacular -- both in architecture and in comfort. As far as the building itself is concerned, be warned: the pictures on the website don't do it justice! As for the comfort, suffice it that, arriving after dark on a wet and stormy night after a stressful drive of close on 400 miles, my wife and I felt instantly at home and relaxed: warmth, peace, and even music playing on a well-chosen radio station. The cottage has every facility one could possibly want, or even manage to think of.

The lady of the manor, the delightful G, could not have done more to make us welcome, or to help with one problem that did arise during our stay (to do with our car: don't ask!) We enjoyed our stay hugely. So did our dog (a large and active Gordon setter), for whose mating we had travelled so far and who was made as welcome as we were, along with family who visited briefly during our stay.

It may be worth adding that we live in rural isolation -- meaning that the one thing we were slightly concerned about was the possibility of traffic noise. Even though a main road passes only some thirty or forty yards away, we were at no time of day or night aware of any. Sleep was utterly peaceful.

Oh, and -- writing as someone who really enjoys a good power shower -- five stars for that too!

Room Tip: The internal layout is unusual, in being largely open-plan; the website makes this admirably clear.

Stayed at Craigengar for a long weekend for a 40th birthday and could not be more pleased with this choice of accommodation. It is even better than it looks on the website, it is HUGE on arrival, the spec is just fantastic, a real "Grand Designs" house. The owner "G" came with us on arrival for a tour and explained where everything was and how things worked and then left us to our weekend. Our group had 12 staying over in the house, adults and children, and some visitors just for the party at night (G is very accomodating to all requests). It's the perfect party house, the open plan kitchen and livingroom was spacious for everyone to chat, mingle, dance, whilst the kids enjoyed the upstairs mezzanine with fantastic games cupboard (the old soldiers were very popular).
The location is close enough to enjoy Livingston and Edinburgh, although a bit strange if you arrive at night and find yourself winding up the road in the field, in the dark. The views are fantastic and we loved the constant presence of the sheep right next to the house, unfortunately we didn't get out to explore much due to the horrendous weather, but we enjoyed indoors. The bedrooms are all lovely as well, we enjoyed the larger Beech downstairs, with great en-suites and lovely decor. In terms of facilities there is everything you'll ever need, as listed on the website, it takes a good host to get these things right. Only negative comment was we had a problem with the heating in the main kitchen/lingroom area (as per previous posters) but we used the log stove to provide extra warmth. Loved Craigengar and hope to come back some day.

9 members of our family enjoyed Christmas 2013 at Craigengar, ranging in age from 85 to 10. We had travelled from Cornwall and Surrey and we had a wonderful week, made even better by the fantastic accommodation and facilities of Craigengar. Geraldine and Hugh were great hosts and ensured that there was a beautiful Christmas tree and decorations in the house. We had a great time and would love to come back! The only down side of the week was the heating was not working satisfactorily, but the large wood burning stove ensured that the main living area was nice & toasty. The views from the house are stunning and we enjoyed watching the sheep during the day. We were staying through the severe wind & rain storms, but still had a fab time.

We have just spent new year at Steading Cottage. 2 families with 4 adults and 4 children from 5 to 14. The cottage was perfect for a relaxing break with the freedom to stay local or travel further afield. Edinburgh is within easy reach - park and ride is the best option. The open fire and open plan lounge/kitchen with a gallery overlooking it from the upstairs bedroom made it really attractive for nights in. Everything was there you needed and the place was clean and well presented. The owners were around if you needed but inobtrusive. All in all I would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable getaway !

We just spent New Year at Craigengar Lodge. Four families totalling 15 people including 7 children ranging from 9 to 19 years of age.

As a group we regularly spend New Year together so have a fairly clear idea of what we are looking for in terms of accommodation/ location etc. I researched quite a bit before choosing Craigengar so was fairly confident it would be good.

In reality it far exceeded our expectations. The setting is much more stunning than a photograph can portray and the lodge is built and equipped to a standard higher than any self-catering property I have seen. It is also extremely practical; a large warm porch area with connecting boot and utility rooms, accessible before entering the main living space was very handy, particularity when a dozen or so cold and damp people return from an outing.

As the weather was challenging for much of the stay our evenings were spent eating, drinking and playing games. The open plan living, kitchen and dining area were ideal for such activities and the gallery provided a good space for teenagers engaged with technology. The excellent bedrooms are sufficiently separate from the living area to afford peace and quiet for those that wanted to read, rest or watch TV. I could go into much more detail on the very high standard of all aspects of the lodge but it has been well covered in other reviews.

Craigengar is a house that is memorable for all the right reasons and I would recommend it to anyone looking for outstanding accommodation in a rural setting, particularly for a large and diverse group. Being only about 30 minutes drive from Edinburgh is another great advantage.

There weren't any negatives worth a mention and what minor questions or issues arose were very kindly dealt with by the owner 'G' who clearly has a great passion for making Craigengar welcoming, comfortable and unique.

ORLEGE END cottage, in its unspoilt setting next to a farm, is the perfect antidote to urban life. The cottage, an attractively converted farm building, felt instantly welcoming and comfortable. The interior is light and spacious, and everything essential to our comfort and enjoyment for our 5 day stay, was there. Comprehensive information is provided on every aspect of the house, and also suggestions about what to see and do, both locally in the more general Edinburgh area. The cottage is conveniently situated for visiting Edinburgh city. We avoided the problem of city parking by leaving our car at Curriehill station, at Geraldine's suggestion, and "commuted" to Edinburgh. When we had our fill of museums, galleries, shopping etc. we were able to easily retreat to our country idyll.
We kept coming across many deft touches in Orlege End, such as the fun of a "grown ups" advent calendar with delicious chocolates, the box of wellies to fit all sizes, the reindeer at the front door......The thoughtfulness that went into creating those and other discoveries, reflected the warmth, sense of fun and attention to detail of the owners, Geraldine (known as G) and Hew. It all added up to a wonderfully relaxing 5 days, and put us In the mood to face the rigours of Christmas and New Year!!
We would very much like to return
