“Fabulous place in the vineyards”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Unfortunately had only one night here. Friendly and professional greeting at the entrance by Noelia who handed us a glass of white wine and showed us around the hotel while our bags were being brought to our rooms. Got there just in time for a free wine tasting with their sommelier. My room was in a two suite casita about 50 yards or so from the lodge itself, surrounded by vineyards, with a view to the west to the Andes, beautifully snow covered in July. A nice bathroom and plenty of room. A small patio with a equally small pool, which would have been fine if it hadn't been winter. The room had a roof terrace, reachable by stairs by the front door. A little chilly the day I was there but I bet it is glorious to have a glass of wine there for a sunset view. Public rooms looked very comfortable but we didn't have enough time to stop. Nice breakfast.

Room Tip: Get one of the rooms in what I'd call casitas out in the vineyards. Quiet with beautiful views...

Great service, phenomenal views, great food, and spa. Typical of Relais-Chateaux, and it's just an unbelievable experience staying at Cavas. In particular, Diana in the dining room deserves praise for her attentive and upbeat service.

I could not however, despite everything, bring myself to give Cavas an excellent rating, because we had a couple of issues during our stay. On our second night, we had to be moved to another room because the heating in our first room (Number 3) had broken, and were moved to room 8.

This was actually good for us as Room 8 had simply outstanding views, and was frankly a better room for that reason. However, we then encountered the rather odd problem of our front door not being able to be closed no matter how hard we tried. We asked that the issue be fixed, and as the problem only arose at night, the hotel was only able to do so the next day. This was a minor inconvenience, and there were no security issues for us.

However, at every instance the problem was resolved promptly cheerfully and with the personal touch. We would most definitely come back to Cavas the next time we're in Mendoza.

Room Tip: Room 8 has spectacular and unobstructed views of sunrise/set and the Andes

The good - lovely setting and good quality of accommodation and common areas. Situated in a remote setting amidst the vines with the beautiful backdrop of the Andes. Rooms are generally all good but see if you can get one that doesn't have others in front of it obstructing that beautiful view.

The bad -
If you are interested in a proper wine experience with knowledgeable tours set up by the lodge then you will find the service and the whole experience very hit and miss. Certain of the staff (it really varies who you get helping you) have a real attitude towards guests and are extremely unhelpful and surprisingly unfamiliar with many local wineries (obviously not catena Zapata). However other staff do their best to make up for it and the owners are also aware of the issue. My recommendation would be to do your research for which wineries you want to visit before you arrive and come well prepared rather than rely on the lodges itinerary.

The itinerary you are offered when you arrive has car transportation provided by the lodge's affiliate company for each winery visit. It is much higher priced than getting a taxi or a hire car (it is also priced in USD) and it is really not worth it. Taxis are plentiful in the nearby town and come to the lodge (or a winery) to pick you up when called. The cost is less than a third the price in most cases.

To put the above in context - we were booked into a wine tasting in Mendoza city for the afternoon at 6pm (we were told it was the last tasting time) and then dinner at a restaurant nearby at 9pm. We traveled 45min in a taxi for the tasting only to be told by the venue (the Vines tasting room) that the booking was never made and in fact the tasting room was closed that evening. We sat in the lobby of the Hyatt for 3 hours (who were lovely and the concierge tried to find alternatives for us but was struggling at such late notice) and then packed it in and headed back to the lodge defeated. The owner of Cavas offered her apologies and a complimentary car the next day but when you only have a few days in mendoza it still is not a great outcome. The next day we traveled out to the Uco Valley (which is a must see area a bit further out than the wineries in Lujan de Cuyo) and were taken to a winery that we had read about and cavas had booked, only to find that the winery was not open to the public and there was no one to be seen. The Cavas driver was extremely apologetic and we were told the winery was unreliable and would not be visited in the future - but that info would have been extremely useful prior to heading out there for over an hour travel.

On the whole the accommodation itself is good, however our experience was badly affected by the service and I would caution other future guests to be forearmed with the above knowledge if they have any interest in doing a proper wine tour of mendoza.

Dear Paul P

We are sorry that your expectations were not totally met last week. We work hard to please each one of our guests and take into account their preferences when they come to Mendoza.

Regarding the transportation, indeed there are many options In the area and our guests are free to choose what suits them better. The advantage of Wine Safari-our affiliate- is that it provides professional, well known and English Speaking guides/drivers, brand new cars- non smoking- fully air conditioned and full insurance. Additionally it offers a bottled water service and flawless punctuality, which is not common in Argentina. With the fluctuation of the peso we find that a price in US dollars allows an easy conversion to own currency for a better trip planning.

We agree on not being properly informed about the operating hours/service provided by the Vines tasting room at the Park Hyatt, and we offered our apology.

As for the visits to the wineries we take this very seriously, as we receive many international visitors who are very knowledgeable about wine. We schedule visits at more than 80 wineries and some of them are closed to the public. That is the case of El Zorzal that you tried to visit in Uco Valley, the owner was only delayed but he would have shown you the winery personally.

We are very glad that you liked our setting and quality, and enjoyed the beautiful views. Your feedback is indeed appreciated and we look forward to serving you again in the near future.

With kind regards, Martin, Cecilia and the Cavas Team

My Husband and I just had a wonderful long weekend at Cavas. Everything was perfect. The accommodations were wonderful and the service was excellent. Shortly after we booked, we received an email with a suggested itinerary that they were happy to modify which included winery visits, restaurants and outdoor activities. When we arrived we were met at the door and provided a glass of wine made from the grapes from the Cava vineyards. Our casita also had a wonderful bottle of Malbec also made from grapes from the Cavas vineyard. The staff set up a wonderful lunch on our private rooftop terrace with the fireplace lit to keep us warm. On our last night we had a delicious romantic private meal in front of the fireplace in the living room. Our private Casita was very luxurious and comfortable.
This hotel is a very special place and should not be missed.

Incredible hotel, beautiful, great polite staff, personalized service. Besides being an amazing Relais-Chateaux hotel, its location is perfect to visit the town of Mendoza or drive to Valle de Uco to see Bodegas. Better yet, the hotel is IN a vineyard, and close to some of the major winemakers of the region.

We could not have been treated better by the wonderful staff and management. Every detail was taken care of before we had even thought to ask. The drivers were very friendly, helpful and really know how to help you get the most out of your stay in this rugged and beautiful part of the world. Simply perfect!

For some hotels Tripadvisor should have a especial six star category for Perfect. This is what Wine Cavas Lodge was for my wife and I celebrating our wedding 15th anniversary. Mendoza wine tours are a must do itself. Wine Cavas Lodge adds to a great experience. The rooms, or better, the individual lodges are a dream come true with a living room, a bedroom with a great king size bed, closet and a incredible bathroom with an awesome tube for relaxing. That's not all...a downstair verandah with a small swimming pool for the hot summer days and a upstair balcony with a outdoor twin sofa and a fireplace to enjoy a nice Malbec at sunset. The staff are all great and very friendly, going out of their way to fulfill your needs. Great vineyard tours and hiking are among the several options, along with a Spa and also horseback riding. This is truly a individual experience. Fantastic place and atmosphere. Come, relax and enjoy a perfect place!
