“Big aspirations, poor delivery”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014

Beautiful accommodation, magnificent pool, wonderful air con in bedrooms.
European food poor, Sri Lankan disappointing, staff only OK. Management haven't got this place quite right, although rooms were clean, tidy and well presented. This place could so easily be idyllic, but misses out.

This is a very large hotel (for Sri Lanka anyway) in its own grounds. The rooms are not large but there is enough room to walk around the beds. The bathroom has a good shower in it and no shortage of hot water. The air conditioning was excellent. The grounds are a bit disappointing. It's just manicured tropical grass with some specimen trees, and a lake containing farmyard ducks. No wildlife except for a resident cattle egret that patrols the grass near the lovely swimming pool. The whole hotel has a very relaxed feel to it and the furnishings and decor are elegant.

The dining room is excellent at breakfast and dinner, as there is buffet service and plenty of choice (but don't bother with the waffles - they look good but it's like eating a cardboard box). Lunch was from a fixed menu and the choice was a little odd. But my macaroni cheese was tasty and certainly straight from the oven.

Free wi-fi was available in the rooms as well as in the public spaces, although there are various different routers and you have to find the right one depending on where you are.

The rooms have a device to switch the electricity off when you are out of the room (by inserting your room key tag in a slot) and the AC does NOT come on automatically when you return. You need to switch it back on manually. Or jam something else in the slot (we use an expired credit card) to ensure that the electricity (and AC) stays on in your absence.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor are more secluded. The ground floor rooms open straight into the garden so...

Room number 104 in this hotel was not up to the standard expected. It was advertised as delux at a cost of $160 US. In my opinion $50 would be enough as it is situated next to the kitchens and the services area. Backpackers were using the other rooms in this part of the hotel. The TV was quite old, wifi was not available in room but was available in the restaurant and bar. There were no chairs or table available on the patio, instead we had to make do with a large concrete block shaped into a seat with two ledges. In addition no chair was provided in room. The furniture within the room was breaking down with brown paper used to line the wardrobes. The multi electric socket in the wall was worn out and only gave intermittent contact. The AC unit was constantly closing down although set to a low temperature but the overhead fan was working well. The bathroom was in need of a full refit with the sink being partially blocked and slow to drain. Amazingly the safe was not secured inside its cupboard and could easily be removed from its location. The restaurant is badly organised in a long room with too many corners causing queues for the food which proved to be adequate at the evening meal, breakfast was not to our taste but be in as early as possible to get a better choice. I have never seen chicken ham before and hope never to again. Service in the restaurant was basic anything out of the ordinary like green tea proved difficult. The staff seemed overwhelmed by the number of guests they had to look after. There were very few smiles.

Hotel is very comfortable and accommodating -- food excellent. Good base for exploring Yala National Park. (Kitchen even packed a take-out breakfast for us before 5 a.m. departure on wildlife safari.) Nice pool.

we had 2 nights here as a base for safaris in Yala National Park. Was about 45 minute drive to get to the park, so just need to factor that in.
Our room had lovely décor and we had a view from our balcony to the pond and rice paddies. There was an area near the bathroom so you could store your luggage so not taking up space in the bedroom. The bathroom was very nice and modern. Room had a/c, room safe and minibar.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. The outdoor dining area was great with a view overlooking the pool; especially nice at night. The food was very well presented and tasty.
The hotel has numerous ponds inside the complex with fish, decorated with flowers which gave the whole place a very relaxing atmosphere.
Overall a place to be recommended

so it's a really nice hotel, and relatively excellent in sri lanka.
the beds are small in width.
the geese (or ducks) are a little bit annoying but it's not a big deal, really.
the breakfast is somehow disappointing not to have fresh juice.
I like the decoration of the ceiling of the room.

A great hotel! Agree with other reviewers that it is under-rated - it offers quality accomm at a value price. Great rooms, lovely staff, very good food. Wonderful pool and modern, clean faciltities - would have liked to stay longer!
