“Nice idea but horrible place”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

I was really looking forward to our stay at Saraii Village. I love camping and I am don´t mind to live in the nature without to much comfort. But this place is not nice. Over priced, not well runned, not very friendly. No unfortunately I can not recommend Saraii Village at all. I have also mailed the management about my complaints. Sri Lanka is a wodnerful country with lovely places to stay in all price categories. It is a shame this place doen´t live up to it´s idea.

Room Tip: You go here for the tree houses. But they are not as cool and cosy as they could be.

Dear EveTraveller111,

It is indeed unfortunate that your stay at Saraii was so unpleasant. We have taken your views into account in our expansion and you will find the new tree houses and chalets to be a completely new and refreshingly unique experience. Our food, our experiences and our spaces are only better than before. We are proud of our people who always get good reviews for their service and willingness to go out of their way to make guests feel at home.

If and when you do return to Sri Lanka we hope you will find the opportunity to discover the new Saraii because we take your opinions seriously enough to revamp, rebuild and restore.

Happy travels and we hope to see you again!

My stay at Sarrai was absolutely wonderful from the first minute on. The staff gave me a very warm welcome with freshly made juice and they were all very nice and eager to help me and make me feel good. They offered several different possible activities, aside from just visiting Yala. I had a great stay, with one of the best dinners I've had in Sri Lanka. The tree house itself was lovely and the whole experience was great for me. I would reccomend this to anyone who wishes to experience a little advanture and be in tune with the nature.

Loved this unique experience if you have an adventurous spirit. We stayed one night in the mud chalet and one night in the tree house. No problems with mosquitos ro bgs and insects as we had good nets over our beds. I loved that we were able to get free wifi in our tree house. The beds were comfortable and the staff really could not do enough for you. They have only been opened for a year and are in the process of adding to the accommodation. The bathrooms were excellent, and spacious with good water pressure in the showers and flush toilets. We booked several of the side trips they offered but I think we may well have been the first people to avail ourselves of these. There seemed to have been a bit of miscommunication between head office who made the bookings and those at the site as they were not aware of the additional side trips we had organized, but they quickly organized those and we were not inconvenienced. The one disappointment though was that the lake BBQ did not have the specialty huge lake prawns, as advertised as they were unaware we were doing this. They did throw together a very tasty BBQ albeit with lovely fresh fish. The journey to the lake at night in the back of the trailer which was driven by the rotary hoe engine was an interesting experience that had us all in fits of laughter. Though sitting on rugs under a tree with coconut oil lights and the many fireflies was enchanting and a different experience. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something a bit different especially if you are travelling with primary aged children to young teenagers. Our best outing was to the Bundala bird park, but give Yala national park a miss.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to review Saraii Village with compliments and constructive comments. We are pleased to hear that you and your family enjoyed a unique experience at Saraii.

We have now established an effective system to communicate the reservation arrangements to our staff at Weerawila. Also, we are sorry about the disappointment encountered with the BBQ dinner. We humbly bring to your notice that all food at Saraii is sourced from the local community around Saraii Village and Large Lake Prawns are not available on all days. Yet, we are certain that our staff would have tried their best to accommodate your request, if you informed in advance.

Nevertheless, we are extremely happy that you and your family enjoyed a memorable vacation! We look forward to welcome you at Saraii Village again with the latest improvements!

We spent two nights in a mud chalet at Saraii in Feb 2014. All our meals were authentic Sri Lankan and were amazing. We went on safari with Saraii in Yala and saw elephants, wild boar, mongeese, deer, crocodiles and many more native wildlife. Damian our safari guide was great and provided breakfast by a river. The outdoor bathroom was a fun experience however the shower is positioned near the open door visible to passersby. Pushpa and the other staff were very attentive. Definitely worth a visit.

We have stayed in the treehouse, which we have chosen for the fun factor.
The house was ok, but seemed poorly maintained. The treehouse is very close to the kitchen and dining area, so there is no privacy. The area is very big and this could have been managed differently.
There is also a lot of construction to expand this hotel.

Now the manager of the hotel was drunk from the moment we have arrived, which did not help us a lot.

Dear Gringuito13,

We are sorry to hear of your poor experience at Saraii. You may also be happy to hear we have taken your review very seriously in our expansion and included your concerns in the revamping of our old units as well. The kitchen and restaurant are entirely revamped and its location is kept away from the tree houses and mud chalets to ensure guests are not disturbed by the kitchen activity which is constant.

If you do visit us again you will also discover we have a whole new team of people who are still willing to be helpful and go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one.

We wish you both great memories in your travels together,

The best place to live on the tree, to meditate and relax, to live with nature and peacocks, to hear wild elephants, to play Carrom, to learn synegalese, to go on Safari in Yale, to go to local family for homemade lunch. Place where I met only amazing people, where I had the best traditional food ever, thanks to very best one Kichen Chef in whole Sri Lanka! Wish You all the best and see You soon! :)
