“Heavenly Treehouse Experience!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

We stayed for one night at this delightful little peace of paradise. Our wonderful hosts Dimuthu and his family welcomed us on arrival with one of the best Mushroom Curries I have eaten, a wonderful start to our stay. We stayed in their unique tree house - what a fabulous idea and it was amazing. Really well done out - all open but sheltered from the wind and sun, I absolutely loved staying here as I have never slept in a tree house. Such a simple idea but such a great feeling sleeping in a tree!!
We did 2 days of safari with Dimuthu, this was fantastic as we saw every wild animal in the park, our highlights were the black bear and the leapords - wow just an awesome experience. The best Safari, the best food and the best tree house!!

I would like to thank Dimuthu and his family for one of the most memorable experiences, I will defiantly be bringing all my friends back here for a visit. Really can't wait to return, see you soon and many thanks once again!!!

We spent two nights here and stayed one night in an indoor room and one in a tree house. Both are lovely- but bug repellent is necessary for the tree house. Dimu took us on a fantastic safari in yala- he is extremely knowledgeable about the all the fauna in the park- especially the birds! And his English is excellent. His entire family is so friendly and the gigantic home cooked meals on the back porch were absolutely delicious!

Wow, we stayed 6 nights and still want to go back! Dimuthu and the whole family looked after us as if we were royalty, fed us as if we were teenagers and guided us to amazing wildlife spots.
The accommodation is sound, clean and comfortable, although basic with no a/c. The treehouse accommodation would be a little more rustic - we didn't try that.
The surroundings are extraordinary with wildlife constantly passing by, one day we stayed at the cabana and still saw a large number of new species pass by.
Dimuthu is an outstanding guide and found us everything we were looking for, he was as excited as us whenever we spotted something special and managed to get the most out of whatever time or space was available.
National parks are all less than an easy hours drive and the area immediately surrounding has lakes, fields and coastline that are teeming with birds, insects, mammals as well as smiling Srilankans.
This place and host are perfect for wildlife lovers, parks are handy, amazing surroundings and knowledgeable host and guide. Just bring plenty of memory chips for the camera.

Room Tip: Tree houses are more rustic but amazing location and outlook Main rooms are solid, simple and clean

Dimuthu's driver picked us up from where we were staying in Hikkaduwa (arrived right on time and waited for us very patiently) and made very good time getting us to Yala in time to watch the sunset on the beach at our amazing campsite. We felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves. One other tent site set up later, but there was plenty of space all around us.

Dimuthu and his team had set up the tent, set the table and started the fire before we arrived, so it all felt very deluxe. Cold beer was provided...we just sat down and soaked it all in! They then proceeded to cook a simple but delicious meal of BBQ herbed chicken and a great noodle salad.

We went to bed early as we were told we'd be up at 4:30 to get an early start on our safari. The tent was a good size for our family of four, and the sleeping mats were comfortable. Overall the quality of the equipment was very good. Dimuthu even has a portable 'flushing' toilet which he set up not too far behind our tent so that we could 'go' in the night if we needed to. One recommendation would be to verify what average temperatures might be like at the time of year you plan to visit...we were there in mid-April and it was very warm through the night, making it is bit tough to get a good sleep, but that was no one's fault and we managed to still enjoy this camping adventure very much!

The next morning, as we emerged from the tent at 4:30, the table had been set with 4 cups and saucers...very chic! We had nice warm milk tea, brushed our teeth and hit the road in the jeep (a very sturdy and comfortable vehicle which Dimuthu himself drives). We arrived at the park entrance in no time, received permits, and were entering the park by 5:45 a.m. Dimuthu seemed to know the park well, and while there were many other vehicles going in we did not follow the 'herd' - he went his own way looking to show us the best there was to offer. And we saw it all - including two leopards! Dimuthu even took the photo of the leopard attached here as he was in a better position to get a good shot. Very nice!

After a couple of hours we stopped for breakfast on the shore, still within the park, and then kept going. By 11:00 a.m. we'd seen so much, so with younger children (they are 6 and 8) and a scorching sun we decided that a half day was enough and asked Dimuthu if we could alter the plan and head back to his place near Tissa. He was very flexible and accommodating. Not only did his wife prepare us a wonderful rice & curry on short notice, but Dimuthu arranged a driver for us to get to Ella that day, instead of the next day as we'd originally planned.

Although we did not stay in the Tree Houses at RiverSide Cabanas, we did have a look. They are simple, but functional and appeared clean. They look out over the river running directly adjacent. The only concern we had was that the location was a little removed from Tissa itself and there did not seem to be much to do there once the safari was over...so we moved on. For a couple traveling without children, it would be a relaxing place to linger, though.

All in all, a terrific time!

Dimuthu and his family are delightful hosts and could not do enough for us. His wife is a fantastic cook, you really would not go out for food. The tree houses are delightful - re-live your youth - but with en-suite! Each tree house he has built improves on the previous one, but they are all great, overlooking the river. We had some musicians so he invited some of his friends for a jam - delightful. He is great (safe) driver, picked us up from Haputale and brought us the scenic route so we saw the waterfalls. We went on safari for a full day with him, saw lots of wldelife in Yala, including glimpse of leopards, but persuaded him to tour the waterholes in the afternoon rather following the leopards which was a good call, lots of elephants, boar and even a jackal. Other friends stayed after us and also had a wonderful experience. incredibly reasonably priced. After just 3 days we were sad to leave them - they are the best!!

Room Tip: Stay in a treehouse - why wouldn't you?

My 2-night stay here was excellent. The treehouse was the first one built and is very much a treehouse. The floor is uneven and creaks underfoot, the whole place shakes when a monkey lands on the roof and the insects are of course inside. But all this adds to the charm of the place and is pretty much exactly what you want from a treehouse experience. It looks directly onto the river where you can see neighbours going about various river activities, and see animals and fish swim by.
The mosquito net was effective and the bed clean. The shower and toilet worked well. There was adequate privacy from outside. Power outlets in the room worked and a fan was available.
Dimuthu and his family were dedicated, helpful and friendly. He and his family took us (myself and two other travellers staying there) to Kataragama for just petrol costs and showed us around the temple. A valuable experience that would not have been as good had I just gone alone by bus.
Though I was travelling solo, he was still able to take me on safari and I am so glad I chose to go with Dimuthu. He has a lot of experience in leading the tours and knows all the tricks to get the best chance at seeing the wildlife. I had the fortune of seeing leopards (twice!) when other jeeps didn't, and we spent a couple of hours observing an elephant herd in the jungle. It's worth getting up 15mins earlier to get a headstart on other tours.
Dinner cooked by his wife was excellent and very well priced.
He also picked me up and dropped me off at the bus.
The only negative for me was the shooting firecrackers at the monkeys hopping across the treetops. However, it seems this is common local practice so fairly unavoidable.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The smaller riverside treehouse is more rustic (palm leaf roof, more ramshackle). The newer larger o...

We had excellent accommodation in Sri Lanka from backpackers through to 5 star but this was the best of all. We had arranged for the owner Dimithu to pick us (5 people) up from Haputale and he drove down the most gorgeous quiet country road to Tissa, far nicer than the busy chaotic road to the lowlands.
The tree houses – reminded me very much of the beach bungalows I stayed in through the 70’s and 80’s but better. Really clean, comfortable, nice ensuite, open views to the river, just loved it. Slept like babies.
The owners – Dimuthi and his wife and cousin were very welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us. Always there for anything we needed/wanted yet not invasive in any way. Wonderful and very hardworking people, we were very sorry to leave. I was even given a lovely necklace for my birthday. Great cooking, great everything.
Safari – we opted for the full day safari and were glad we did. The morning was spent chasing glimpses of leopards (3) and then a siesta period in the middle of the day because animals aren’t out then. Bring a book or catch a snooze. Later, when all the other trucks were chasing leopards again, we decided not to join them and Dimuthi took us to water holes where we saw 10 times more than we had in the morning. Elephants, herds of deer, a jackal and heaps more.

If you want five star luxury this is not the place for you. If you want extremely good but basic accommodation with fantastic people, go there, you’ll love it.
I want to go back there - right now!

Room Tip: We had the first tree house that was built, lovely and rustic without being kitsch
