Shallow Bay and Gros Mourne is a fantastic place to visit. We rented a two bedroom cabin for $140. Cabin was new and clean. With limited (we had none) cell service in the area a phone was required. I believe the staff should have advised us that there was none in that cabin. I also needed an extra key for the cabin as we were travelling with other family members. The front desk worker told us there was no second key, then referred to the cleaning lady having it and then something about the maintenance man having to get it for us. She was uninterested in helping us out on this and this caused considerable inconvenience for us. I only mention this here so the owners hopefully rectify this. At $140 per night and extra key is not an unreasonable request.

So sorry your stay was not a pleasant one. Yes, a second key is a reasonable request. We are dismayed to hear that our staff was less than enthusiastic in their response to your problem. The owners are very specific that our guests' needs come first and as a result of your comment, a staff meeting was held to address this situation. Thanks again.

We really liked our one night stay here while traveling in Gros Morne. We stayed in a motel unit and were pleased with the cleanliness of it and the hotel staff were lovely, every one of them. Cute little town and the restaurant was surprisingly good with traditional Newfoundland fare like "Newfie Mug Up" Jiggs Dinner and Brewis. Good breakfast too, right on the ocean.

So, went to the website, and thought "Hey, after 4 hours of driving towards the end of our NFLD stay, this will be a nice place to stay". But take note - the website only talks about the motel part of this place.

Arriving at 2:15 pm (2pm check in), we were told to come back at 3:15, and to find something to do in Cow Head. Now, no offense here is intended, but there is not that much to do here. Plus, with two young children (one is 2) and having driven most of the day, we just wanted to check in. So, we went to the local cemetery and killed time.

We came back and received our key to a cottage, to find out they are across the road (not ocean side) and have two views: the cottages across from us (a narrow street goes between them) from the front, and some "older" homes and an overgrown yard behind us. Not what we were expecting. But the cottage looked nice, so we entered.

Wow, the smell of cat urine, covered with fruity smelling spray, was almost too much. All windows open, we tried to call the office. The phone, with a little note saying how it is provided for our convenience, was not working. And the fireplace which is advertised on the Canada Select website and in some of the establishments pictures, well, it's electric. That does not count as a fireplace.

The pictures on their website is a bit deceptive. It flips from pictures of hotel rooms, beautiful bathrooms, and a view, to the cottages, with no differentiation between them, so one can not tell what one or the other offers. We really thought we had a view, and would be able to check in when we arrived. If we were not staying for one night, we would have been.

We are truly sorry that your experience here was not a pleasant one. The owners pride themselves on the quality of their property and are very displeased that this was your experience. As a result, a thorough walk-through was done of the entire property, with any maintenance issues being addressed. We are very glad you brought this to our attention, as all comments can only help us to improve. Thanks again.

We stayed 2 nights at the B&B associated with the motel. In our opinion, the B&B was nicer than the motel. We had a nice room with a beautiful view and deck right on the bay. Based on the previous reviews and conversations with other guests, we avoided the motel restaurant at dinner and ate instead at the BackCove Cafe, which was good. The motel breakfast was fine. We went to Gross Morne Theatre productions both nights and enjoyed the shows. The hike out to the shore beyond the old lighthouse was well worthwhile - lots of limestone rock formations and interesting geology. Very different from the sandy beach in the other direction!

We stayed in Cabin 6, one of the oldest. It was clean, comfortable and well equipped with fridge, stove, microwave dishware and utensils. It did not have the musty smells sometimes found in cabins. Location is great for touring the northern portion of Gros Morne or for heading north on the Viking Trail. We found the food in the restaurant was fine. Pool is clean, well maintained and comfortably heated. Hot tub is also clean and appropriately heated. Spectacular view of ocean and sunsets from the pool, hot tub and dining room. Wonderful beach less than 10 minutes away. I would recommend Shallow Bay Motel and Cabins for mature couples as well as families traveling with children. Staff were friendly and helpful.

For the price, the rooms were pretty great looking; I thought the bathroom was fantastic! Very clean and quiet, staff were friendly to a certain extent; it was an overall good service.
As for the resturaunt, I thought the food quality was minimal; salad didn't taste fresh, sub was somewhat poorly made. If you want good food at this place, I definitely recommend sticking to traditional "Newfoundland food."

Wanting somewhere in Gros Morne convenient for the theatre festival ('Tempting Providence' was truly superb!) we opted for a cabin here. Having just stayed at another, wonderfully well-cared for cabin, we felt that ours at Shallow Bay had seen better days. Poorly laid-out (you walk through the door and the dining table blocks the path to the bedrooms) and with an uncomfortable sofa and both bedroom light fittings affixed poorly to the wall, the furnishings had certainly seen many seasons' wear and tear and were in need of overhaul.
The desk staff were very helpful and friendly, however, and the cabin's cramped kitchen was adequate for our needs. The cabins' layout, like a small street at a tangent to the main road, meant that one's view is of another cabin and not anything picturesque. I suspect we'd look elsewhere for good value, well cared-for accommodation if we were to return again to this stunningly beautiful area.
