We were lucky to have found the Laforet Zao, given the lack of English-language reviews, at the suggestion of relatives who live in the area. This hotel is much newer than others in the area. The rooms were spacious, clean, and non-smoking. Our family had triple and double rooms on the 7th floor. The rooms all had twin beds, but the triple rooms were a bit larger to accommodate 3 beds. The mountain views from the rooms were incredible (the view from the triple rooms was slightly superior to that of the double, but they were all amazing).
The Laforet has two different onsen, one is an indoor, pool-style onsen with a washing area (I liked the quasi-private washing stalls), and a more naturalistic onsen that looks like a rotemburo, only it is technically not outdoors. It has big windows overlooking the woods and doors that open to the outside, and a rock-style pool. Both onsen have segregated men's and women's sides.
The rooms came with Japanese-style breakfast at two different restaurants, a buffet and a traditional restaurant. Both had good food and nice atmosphere.
This was a very nice onsen in beautiful surroundings in the mountains and I would definitely stay there again.
