“LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION”
Reviewed 13 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We have been holidaying in France or Spain this past seven summers. This was our best two week vacation yet.

The omens were great before we arrived. Being impressed with what we learned about Quillan online, Ruth was very prompt is replying to our enquiry by e mail and text, with even an odd phone call too.

Our gentle, warm and engaging hosts, Ruth and family, were there to greet us at the train/bus station, and walk us to number 6, Rue Baptiste Marcet, with one or two treats in the fridge, some fruit and veg, enough coffee and tea to revive us, as well as a cool bottle of a decent Rose. They even took one of us to the Supermarket and back again so we could stock up. They also had to hand all the relevant maps, brochures, some tips on where to go, and showed us where the tourist office was. (Very friendly and helpful staff there, good English too)

The house is superbly located, adjacent to the Station, and very near the heart of the town of Quillan. However, that's not all, if you have kids, you will close to the Forge Adventure Centre with its great range of activities, even for the drop in visitor. The staff are so professional and friendly, with one or two able to speak decent English. It is only ten or fifteen minutes walk from the house, towards Axit, on the main road to Perpignon. (There is a walk trail, on an old disused rail track that brings you right to the place and is safer for pedestrians).

The house is so well situated for hill walkers and cyclists, be you an amateur, novice or athlete. So, off you go, up and down the mountains or simply on a curious trail to other villages such as Ginoles or the cool waters of the bathers' child friendly lake in Puivert (16KM away). Our own favourite trek was to follow the course of the river, on a hiking/walking trail, until you came into the back of a village, a round trip of about 6 K. Walking boots or old runners are recommended.

And if the kids are not up to that kind of exercise there is always the local swimming pool only a two minutes stroll from the house, beside the bus/train station, with two life guards on duty and decent sized pool and separate kiddies and toddlers areas too.

Our stay in late July early August happily coincided with a great international folk music and dance festival, (the Georgians were magnificent!). Then there was the on-going bonus of that cheap bus and train, one euro, for places like Perpignon, Limoux, and Carcassone, and towns on those lines such as Esperaza, (Dinosaur museum in Esp was brilliant), Axit, etc.

The Highlight for us had to be the white water rafting on the Aude, organised by La Forge. While it sounds expensive at 26 euro per person, when you consider the use of wet suits, protective gear, life jackets, helmets, transport to get there and back, transport for the rubber rafts, an experienced guide on board, with no corners cut on health and safety, it is terrific value. This is not us in the clip, but you get the picture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smK7SqoCFQQ

If your kids like to be active, if they can swim, this is the place to bring them. If no kids, this is also a great place to go to unwind. So many walks, great air, great riverside cafes, where the heat is not dead heat, with the altitude making it much less oppressive than other parts of the South of France and Spain. An odd day here and day of fresh relieving wind or cloud, even thunder storms, (usually at night), was always followed, yet again, with successive days of bearable heat and sunshine.

Locals were gentle and friendly and the two supermarkets, Spar off the square, almost opposite the Church; and Dias on the road for Limoux, about a mile outside, were decent enough. (There is a very good fruit and veg shop in Quillan as well, however local markets were excellent for fresh produce, and were better value, be it fruit and veg, or deli and cheese stalls. (The Paella was really really good value, a sight to behold with legs of chicken and fully shelled sea food hiding in the heap of saffron coloured rice and veg)

There are a few decent restaurants, if predictable in menu, but you will notice as others have, that France is getting more expensive. Hollande has not helped tourism with more indirect taxes, a half litre of a decent blonde beer will set you back 5.50! (After a big bike hike, wine is the last thing you want!!) If you can keep to one or two courses and watch the extras such as soft drinks, desserts, etc, you will manage to keep it within the bounds of your family budget. Best food for us was in the Gallery, a little dearer, but well worth the price in terms of quality and quantity.

One last thing, the bakery on the Square, I dare you to resist. Wow!

All in all a brilliant holiday, in a clean, functional, cosy house, with plenty beds, three bedrooms, and a nice enclosed back, with barbecue, if desired, but above all owners who don't live too far away, are not in your ear, but are there for you if you need them.

Any advice! Yes. Get out and about. The location facilitates that perfectly.

For us, the best holiday in years. Thanks Ruth, Peter, Dave and Katie.
