We stayed at the hotel mid-week, recently. It was excellent. Staff were so friendly and chatty. Everywhere was really clean. The room was large (for 3 ) and the beds were extremely comfortable. Buffet style breakfast-cereal, juices, croissants. You make your own toast. There is also a menu to chose what cooked breakfast you want. Excellent evening meals in the bar too. Vegetarian menu--limited to 3 choices, on request. 5 minutes walk up the hill is the brilliant Harbour Bar--well worth a visit!!

Room Tip: I would suggest the hotel would be quite noisy on a 'club' night, so might be worth speaking...

Stayed at the Downings Bay hotel for two nights end March 2014 with family. It was a wonderful experience. Hotel very welcoming, extremely well maintained and comfortable. Rooms spacious and cosy. The breakfast was most enjoyable. Would not hesitate to recommend and happy to stay again.

Nice surprise on overnight stay at 'the bay' with my wife. Hassle free checkin, freindly staff. Room was big, bright and very clean. Although it is shown as three star, it may just be punching above its weight.

We stayed in the Downings Bay Hotel for a week in September while touring the area with Sean Mullan's "Walking and Talking in Donegal" group. The hotel was his pick, and it could not have been better.

When you arrive, you'll find yourself in the beautiful lobby, which has plenty of seating for you and your family/friends. The front desk staff could not have been more efficient or kind, and had all of us (all 12) checked into our rooms in no time.

The hotel is made up of three floors, and most of us were on the second. There is an elevator, which is great when you're first arriving with your luggage, and there is also a staircase behind the elevator for quicker access.

The rooms themselves could not be beat. Each room has (at least) one double bed and one twin bed, a dresser, a closet, a desk, and a table with two chairs. You are provided with coffee and cookies every day, along with an assortment of milk and sugars. The bathrooms are gorgeous - very spacious, nearly all marble, and stocked wtih Gilchrist & Soames bath products. Hotel staff also provided plenty of nice, fluffy towels.

We ate our evening meals in the restaurant downstairs every night, and they were superb! Each meal was three courses, and there were different options every day. There was a huge variety to choose from, and everything looked good. I highly recommend the rack of lamb, as it was one of the best I've ever had.

We ended most nights in the hotel's pub, which was charming, lively, and well staffed. The Guinness were 4€ each, and I definitely drank more than my share! Though Downings isn't your typical tourist spot, it is a charming little town - take a walk up the hill to McNutts to do some purchasing in their shop, or grab a coffee and some lunch in the coffee shop just down the road.

I really can't say enough good things about the hotel itself, and the wonderful staff. Everyone was a delight, from the front desk to the bar to the kitchen. I highly recommend a stay at the Downings Bay Hotel if you find yourself in the area - you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: They still have smoking rooms, so if that is a big concern for you be sure to request a non-smoking...

I have just returned from a week stay in the Downings Bay with my husband and son. The staff were excellent and so helpful and friendly. Having stayed in many hotels the breakfast here is undoubtedly better than any other. We were only charged 10 euros per night for my son age 12 and this included breakfast which was excellent value. Hotel and leisure fcailities at Marghabeg are 1st class. I would recommmend this to all as they cater for everyone.
