“This is the place to stay in Cucugnan”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

We stayed here by chance as Cucgnan is in a quiet valley, off the main road. Glad we did. Others have described it as a restaurant with rooms, and that's true, but what rooms! If you're used to strange shaped, tiny rooms with mysterious plumbing, then this will delight you, as it's modern, spacious, and really quiet. The rooms are interesting and reveal the touch of an architect. The restaurant is deservedly the main attraction, with a truly stunning setting overlooking vineyards and a wee bit of the Cathar castle Queribus visible on the ridge line as the sun sets. We will remember our meal here for some time, and that's saying something on a trip through this part of France. Cucugnan has some memorable wines, and I recommend you just ask your host to serve you the local producer's offerings. These wines will command your attention. This is a great place to base yourselves for a visit to the two Cathar castles in the immediate area.

Room Tip: They all looked pretty good.

From the map this looked like a great location to visit two Cathar castles, and that turned out to be the case. As others have noted, this is foremost a restaurant with rooms available. There must have been some serious remodeling going on, as the smell of fresh paint was still noticeable. We stayed in the room directly above the restaurant and it was probably the best room of the entire trip. It was large, clean, modern and had a brand new bathroom. We also had dinner here, which I will review separately. the combination of a fine room, excellent restaurant, cozy village and proximity to the castles, made this an excellent choice.

Room Tip: we stayed in Room 2.

This is firstmost a restaurant with rooms, which are rather simple, but quite nice and good value. Whereas the restaurant is a step up and offers good, enjoyable regional food, quite hearty.
The service is rather unsmiling, but opens up if you inquire about something. However it is also imprecise : un demi pichet au lieu du quart commandé, mistake in bill, ...
Nice views from the small room windows and especially from the restaurant terrasse.
I would return and recommend it.

The auberge is on the Main Street of Cucugnan. Some of its rooms overlook the valley below planted in vineyards. The room itself was small, decorated to look 'ancien' with rough beam in the ceiling, one stone wall. The floor tiles were cracked because of a depression in the floor near the bed, the water was only just warm, the TV did not work, nor did the heaters. One wouldn't perhaps expect to need heat in late May in
southern France but this has been an unusually wet and cold month. Mme Fannoy, owner, was not the most welcoming of hostesses. The village itself is quite pretty, full of auberges and B&Bs.

Room Tip: Ask for room at the back

Very nice and cosy hotel with a double room at 25 €. Expensive restaurant (nothing to eat for less than 20 €) and ... extremely expensive breakfast at ... 9 €. Pretty little village and outstanding environment. Tautavel caves (world heritage) nearby ...

Room Tip: N° 6 has a little window with a nice view to the valley

We were quite amazed that on the days we'd booked to be there (middle of May) the weather was very bad and the village was virtually all closed. Our hotel du Vigneron experience during rain and cold was just that, cold and wet: no-one available at 'reception', nor any other viable way to contact them save going down to the restaurant below (when it was open). No relevant local information was handy nor was any help finding any open local cafes offered. Frosty looks when making requests. Not a friendly place on this occasion. We were wet and cold and the village was closed.
We discovered the Mill cafe, and hoped to return for breakfast, "Yes we will be open". But next morning: closed.
We had a chance to return a week or so later when the weather was nice and it was a whole different place, with bus groups visiting and some cafes and bars open.
