We were staying in Puivert so it was natural to visit the castle. We walked there from the village up a path that starts in a church's grounds.

It is an interesting space with several rooms to explore and steep stone winding staircases (not for the faint-hearted!). Up on the top there is a really low wall with no safety barrier, so people with children might need to pay careful attention but the view is decent.

It cost about 5 euros to go in. There's a working forge, some horses and inside there are a couple of displays. In the main room the music wasn't working when we were there but otherwise it is quite nice.

This castle is a bit out of the way so probably less crowded than many. It's partially furnished with more displays than most cathar castle ruins. This place has a 'civilised' history - a place known for music rather than combat. It has been used in a couple of feature films - I think including 'The Ninth Gate'. The view from the roof is very good on a clear day but the walls around the edge are quite low so supervise young children closely. The steps up are also a potential hazard. Look out for the medieval musicians at the base of the ceiling vaults in the 'music room'.

Some of the Cathar Chateauxs lack interest but this one has been restored sensitively to make a visit worthwhile though to be fair the views alone are worth the effort. Good half day visit.

The guy on the gate is a bit miserable but after that the grounds were lovely, the steps were rickety but the climb was well worth it, the views from the roof are amazing....keep children close as the edge is an easy thing to fall over! The chapel was a lovely place to sit and quietly bless your faith :)

an amazing chateau with a panoramic vista in the heart of the cathar region. Easy access for the elderly or children.. no steep climbs...
