“COULD be so wonderful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2013 via mobile

Doing research for our travel business, we visited the hotel on a Friday. Setting gorgeous, well signed, easy to find by car. All the staff very welcoming, helpful and polite. Unfortunately, the whole place- hotel, restaurant, spa, thermal baths - all slightly run down and needing a coat of paint. Lunch was a huge disappointment, scratched glasses, ran out of Coca Cola, food mediocre to poor. Wine listed on menu not available, inferior substitution appeared without the bottle to view, in a too small glass which was old, cloudy and poor quality. No side plates for (stale) bread. Very sad, as waiter and maitre d'hôtel very enthusiastic. Would worry about bringing clients here for a meal. Could be AMAZING, gardens lovely and hotel an interesting gracious old building. What a shame about the restaurant!!

This is a beautifull location , spa is very nice , and it is not crowded at all , so plenty off space for all guests .
Pools are very nice , and also pool beds are good and more then enhoug .
Also restaurant is good , but compared with other places in the area to expencive.
Also most off the staff can only speak Italian or french , not English , this can be a problem , like we saw with some American people.

Room Tip: All rooms are different , with their own decoration , but rooms on the second floor are perfect.

We went as a group of four people and booked the November special. Which means we paid 99 EUR per person for the room with double occupancy. With this special, the price was ok, but I wouldn't pay more. The rooms are nice, but rather basic. The beds could be more comfortable. The spa area is very ice, especially the pool areas with the hot water from the springs. Also the sauna and the steam sauna were enjoyable. The treatments at the spa, of which I had several, were ok. I would classify them as average. The manicure and pedicure both were disappointing. My hands have looked better after doing it myself.
The real let-down however was the restaurant. Here the prices are much to high for the quality that is offered. Also the service lacked dedication and every question asked was treted like a burden.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2010

We stayed in the Grand Hotel Stigliano as a friend was getting married in nearby Bracciano. First impressions were good - the location is absolutely stunning, the building beautiful. It has a gorgeous pool and in the July sunshine the whole place looked perfect on the surface (give or take the sulphurous stench, which you kind of have to accept if you're staying in a place boasting of its thermal springs).

However, the service and amenities were just not up to those favourable first impressions, nor to the four star rating given to this hotel.

There is no laundry service, which was problematic given that all of our luggage had disappeared in transit, and no preparedness given those circumstances to make an exception or find a creative solution (thanks do go however to the staff who helped us get our luggage back - though the constant pressure to leave a generous tip for that service became very annoying over the course of the weekend). The laundry issue extended to the fact that the hotel has one iron, which a succession of frantic guests (including the groom) were trying to borrow to press their wedding attire.

The restaurant is bizarre - almost completely empty (more staff than diners), with a single menu consisting of several photocopied sheets of paper stapled together. When we asked for the wine list we were told that there was "red or white"... despite the fact that the entrance to the restaurant is lined with dozens of fine Italian wines (and someone else managed later to get hold of a list on the fifth time of asking).

Trying to get a taxi back to Rome was almost impossible - it took some people six hours - and although this can't really be attributed to the hotel, they seemed completely at a loss to know how to help - or in fact to be bothered to do so.

At the pool, there is no poolside service, and the pool assistant, on being asked for a towel, gave a blank look and said "spa"... it emerged that you have to leave the pool and go to the health centre to pick up towels and the antiquated swimming caps which are compulsory to go in the pool.

The rooms are fine, and ours at least had lovely views, but the bathrooms are dated and the shower overflowed as, somewhat revoltingly, the drain was blocked.

I can think of much better ways to spend more than 600 euros than two nights here and I would not go back. I really think that given the amazing setting and the gorgeous building this place, if the right investment and approach to service were made, could be incredible. At the moment though, I'm afraid it's not.
