This is a gite, which after I have stayed in one, I am now a complete fan of. It is a bed and breakfast and restaurant.
The restaurant was great. Philippe is from Alsace and cooks up specialities from the region using local produce. It's XPF3200 for dinner and dessert and they were both lovely - the best value for money meal we had in our whole trip. Actually, I think it was the best meal. The steak really was mouthwateringly tender and came with a delicious sauce and Philippe made extra of the prawn dish so we could all try this local delicacy. What was fun, and why I have described this as a lovely New Caledonia experience, is that we all (owners and guests) sat around the table together for dinner and chatted. Philippe can speak German and French and Marion has some English has well as French, and is very willing to give it a go. It's amazing how much you can make yourself understood!
The rooms are simple, but clean and with ensuite, and best of all for rather expensive New Caledona cost XPF6300 a night for a couple including breakfast (homemade preserves with bread and pastries). You can check them out on the website: http://cigogne.onlc.fr/3-Nos-chambres.html We only stayed for a night, but in hindsight it would have been good to have stayed for two to see if Philippe could better the dinner of the first night!
The place is a bit out of Bourail heading north. It's on the left. You do need to book in advance for dinner. Our hotel in Noumea called the morning we headed up to make the reservation and that was fine, but you may strike more difficulty in the high season.
In terms of things to do in the area, we went snorkelling at Poe beach and walked the track at La Roche Perchee, both of which were very pleasant. They have what looks to be a complete collection of Bourail tourist brochures at the gite if you need inspiration.
