“An amazing Orkney experience”
Reviewed 27 April 2010

Our third visit to Buxa Farm, Our April weather included snow, rain, gale force winds but also brilliant sunshine! The chalet was always warm and cosy, Keith and Kathy had thoughtfully provided a small electric fire which came in handy as hubby is always up before the central heating kicks in to watch the Hamnavoe sailing! Chalet is beautifully presented with all mod cons and some very thoughtful touches, You can prepare a full meal or pack a picnic everything you need is there. There is so much to see and do in Orkney but a good holiday could also be had just roaming around Buxa Farm - it has its own stretch of beach, and if you like boats or birds you will not be disappointed with the displays right outside your window.

We've had several stays at Buxa, and thoroughly enjoyed it each and every time. the accommodation is bright, clean and modern ( it's superior to many other places we've tried in Orkney ! ). the location is an excellent base for exploring Orkney and the other Isles.
I strongly recommend a stay at Buxa !

We recently paid a second visit to Buxa. We have not stayed in better self-catering accommodation. It has been very thoughtfully planned to take full advantage of the ever changing views over the Clestrain Sound. It is very well equipped and beautifully maintained. Orkney offers a rich variety of holiday activities - the natural world (birds, seals, flowers), history, culture, crafts, inter-island travel and an amazing library in Kirkwall. The roads are quiet but the community is alive and the people welcoming. Orkney is a good place for holiday and Buxa an excellent base.

Excellent accommodation, comfortable and well equipped. Owners very anxious to ensure that guests were happyTo sit and look out over the Flow with short eared owls and curlews for company made for a peaceful and relaxing holiday which would be hard to beat. Away from it all but yet within easy driving distance of Kirkwall and Stromness. We shall certainly return.

We had a magnificent holiday staying at Buxa Farm chalet. We were made very welcome and knew that Kathy was nearby and happy to be contacted if there were any need (which there wasn't!). The views across the water to Hoy, the lighthouse and then looking right to see if the ferry was in at Stromness were wonderful. I remember sitting one day taking a series of photos as the clouds moved across the sky.
Our daughter-in-law and grandaughter (aged 9) swam every evening about 9 o'clock and several time were swimming alongside a seal. We also often watched an owl fly from post to post not far in front of the chalet.
It was a perfect place to be in residence with warm, clean and well equiped accomodation in a stunning setting with wonderful views to see. However, it also served extremely well as a base to tour the island, so its location is spot on.
One of my highlights was meeting a young couple at Julie's Bistro in Stromness and ending up going to their home to play and then buy a violin!
We cannot recommend the whole experience highly enough - will be returning with other members of our extended family.

We went to Orkney to see the islands and visit the historic sites. We found the chalets after a long internet search and we felt very lucky. The chalet was warm, clean and comfortable with good beds (and that is rare!), the owners were very welcoming and left you alone to enjoy your stay. It was dark when we arrived at Stromness so the stunning view from the windows the next morning was quite a surprise! We had exhilerating walks along the cliffs at Yesnaby in howling gales, and basked in the hot sun at Waulkmill Bay. There are so many wonderful places to visit and we did so much in our two weeks but here are a few highlights; we had excellent lunches at Appiehouse Gallery, bought an interesting painting at the Yellow Bird Gallery, a fascinating trip to Hoxa Tapestry via the Italian Chapel, watched my wedding ring being made at Sheila Fleet's jewelers, had Scara Brae to ourselves, picked Crow Berries for a crumble on the Brough of Deerness and bought very good quality organic meat, fish and vegetables at Jolly's Produce on the outskirts of Kirkwall. The beautiful islands inspired me to make a silk wall hanging based on the stunning colours of the red cliffs and the sunsets. We would happily recommend the chalets, it was a memorable holiday and will will return.
