“Big Ships”
Review of The Viking Centre

The Viking Centre
Reviewed 2 February 2013

The workmanship that went into building these ships is mind boggling. The details that have survived that we are still able to see are beautiful. They are hugh ships!

A great introduction to the Orkneys and the amazing connections with the Vikings and Norse. No wonder so many names sound so Norwegian!

Self-guided and well displayed rooms.

Clean bathrooms.

Amazing to be able to walk into the Earl's Bu and round Kirk and the graveyard. Surrounded by history indeed!

Small but well done, free and interesting.Good film about the Norse Saga of Orkney. Useful for loos and shelter from the liquid sunshine. Close to the Bu and the round Kirk.

The Earls Bu at Orphir is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. it has free parking, spotless toilets and like most things in Orkney is totally free. We always visit at least twice during our holidays and my 4 boys love it. We take a picnic and the kids love to explore the ruins, and watch the film, which really is the highlight. Dont forget the exhibition which requires some attention but you will come away knowing everything you need to know!. There is also an interesting cemetery attached which has some wonderfully unique graves which tell of someones story long lost. If you are lucky the farm collie will also come over and spend time with you in exchange for fuss!! Finally the model Viking longship outside is a must for small boys everywhere!
