“An Idyllic Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

We have just ended our third stay at the 'Puffin Quoy' cottage this time for 2 weeks exploring new areas of the fascinating Orkney Isles and visiting old favourites. We love this cottage which is ideal for couples. Its ideally located to explore the islands. One week is never enough on the Orkneys which is why we extended our stay to 2 weeks this time around. It was lovely to see Kevin and Caroline Critchlow again and of course little 'Crumble' the terrier. They are always so welcoming.
Everything you will need in a self catering is there and don't worry about bringing stuff over from the UK with you because in the main town of Kirkwall, which is just a 15 minute drive away, you will find a Tesco, Lidl and a Co-op stores next to each other stocking everything you will need. The cottage is well supplied with cleaning materials anyway. The town of Stromness is only a 10-15 minute drive away in the other direction and that is where we found the newly revamped 'Ferry Inn' pub which effectively became our 'local'.
There was a survey last year to discover the happiest place to live in the UK and the Orkneys came out on top. Visit it yourself and you will discover why. Two weeks at 'Puffin Quoy' has recharged our batteries once again. It was just the therapy we needed.

As always a pleasure to have you stay in The Puffin again this year-and you even saw a whale!
It's always the best compliment we can have to have our guests return year after year..
Once again thank you for the review and for taking the time to tell others about us and to give your recommendations.

We stayed at Puffin Quoy for three nights in May 2013. The apartment was so much more than we expected. Every detail- from the quality appliances, the bedroom furniture, the bathroom and spa, the kitchen (with its wonderful sparkle in the granite bench-top), the decor and views from the living room reflected both a vision for hospitality and a respect for the environment. Kevin and Caroline were wonderful hosts who seem to delight in providing a 5 star experience for their guests. Nothing was too much trouble, and the breakfasts were to die for. Our three night stay at Puffin Quoy was the highlight of our month long trip through Scotland, London and Paris. True Orkney hospitality that will bring us back again and again.

We stayed at Caroline and Kevin's B and B for two nights in May. It was our favorite accommodation during our 2 week trip to Scotland. We liked the location since it was out of town but in between Stromness and Kirkwall and close to some of the main sites. It is also very close to the ferry to the island of Hoy-we took a day trip there. Our hosts were very accommodating and ready with tea and treats in the afternoon as well as dropping tea at our door in the morning. Caroline is a fabulous cook...we loved our haddock and poached egg as well as the salmon and scrambled....all beautifully presented. The room was very comfortable, very clean and fashionable. The bathroom was small and the shower is actually part of the room-we didn't mind and enjoyed it as quirky. There is just one B and B plus they have several lovely self catering units that looked great.

Puffin quoy has earned every single star it has been awarded! It is the most beautiful, luxurious conversion of an old farm building, cleverly designed with the living/ dining area having floor to ceiling glass walls turning the room into a luxurious wild life hide! We loved the decor and furnishings, underfloor heating and multifuel stove for a chilly evening. Puffin quoy has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing comfortable holiday on Orkney. ( The Internet wifi is faster than we have at home!) Its position on the island is perfect for exploring as a different direction can be taken each day. The views from the cottage are stunning.
Caroline and Kevin were so welcoming. One evening Caroline made us a delicious 3 course meal and gorgeous bara brith loaf. Nothing is too much trouble.
Everyone should have at least a week of rest and relaxation here!

It is almost with a Dickensian pettiness that I write this review of the Quoy of Houton. First, I nearly never get motivated to write them and secondly and most importantly, it is such a wonderful place and with such wonderful people, that like Scrooge it feels almost too good to share.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at this B&B for a couple of days. Having arrived late with the boat from Aberdeen and realised it was a bit of a cab ride out, I already had my doubts. (do rent a car) But even given the late hour seeing the house tuckered in the Houton bay and the warm greeting from Caroline, Kevin and last, but not least their adorable dog Crumble, my mindset immediately changed. With a house renovated by themselves, it feels as if every square inch of this place is thought through by someone with dream or a vision how it should be. Everything from the great Orkney soap in the shower, the wake-up call with a pot of tea each morning to the stunning breakfast with eggs from their own hens, local salmon, French press-coffee and so on made you falter at the each thoughtful consideration after the other. But although you felt pampered, the warmth of the place and people never once felt artificial, it almost felt like home but better.

I don't know if you as a reader will find this tirade of superlative adverbs useful, many of the details of our trip feels like our personal experience, so I rather keep those to myself and all I finally can say is that I will make sure to go out of my way to visit Caroline and Kevin again! Words won't suffice to explain how much I think you should go and make your own trip and experience here! As long as we can still come and visit this little Orcadian nugget again!

We spent four amazing days at the Quoy of Houton B&B and enjoyed every second of it. Caroline and Kevin were lovely hosts, who truly made us feel at home (every morning, half an hour before breakfast, Caroline would bring us tea and when we got back from a day of exploring the islands, there were always two slices of freshly baked cake waiting for us) - so thoughtful! The breakfast was amazing (home-made bread, eggs from "Golden Chick" & the rest of the chicken gang in Caroline's and Kevin's garden, tasty salmon, lot of fruits, ...heavenly!) , as was our room (very comfy, amazing view).
We can't wait to go back!!

We stayed four nights at the Quoy of Houton B&B and thoroughly enjoyed it I'm trying to find a reason to give it less than perfect marks, but can't think of any! The house is lovely with beautiful landscaping. Ours was a spacious, clean and comfortable room, Caroline and Kevin wonderful were hosts and the location was great for exploring the islands. And the FOOD was FABULOUS!!! I will be very happy to return to the Orkneys and stay again with them at Quoy of Houton B&B.
