Scapa Flow Lodges
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We have stayed in both Cava and Rysa Lodges and they are excellent places to stay. This year was our fifth year staying in these lodges and we are always very impressed with everything. We love the Orkneys and Margaret makes us so welcome. This year our visit to Orkney was made even more special when two of our daughters flew up from Exeter to spend a few days with us. A holiday to rember and a holiday to look forward to next year. Thanks Margaret. Mike & Diane Bennett.

We stayed in Rysa Lodge for a week. It was absolutely excellent, modern, well-equipped, and with fabulous views across Scapa Flow. Very handy for exploring mainland Orkney, also for the ferry to Hoy. A longer drive (nowhere on mainland Orkney is far) to Tingwall got us onto the ferry to Rousay, which has even more archeological sites than mainland. There are many other islands to explore if you have more time - in peak season you need to book ahead for the ferries. The scenery, vegetation and bird-life are also fantastic. For meals we can recommend Noust Bar in Orphir, the Orkney Brewery at Quoyloo and the Royal Hotel in Stromness. For a decent supermarket you have to go to Kirkwall.

We stayed in the Cava Lodge for one week and we thought it was great, the view looking out on Scapa Bay was just the best. The lodge was very modern and clean and Margaret the owner made us very welcome. The underfloor heating was a real bonus as the weather was a wee bit chilly at times. All in all a really superb place to stay and we would recommend it to anyone coming to Orkney. Thank you.

Modern well appointed accommodation in a tranquil but convenient location for exploring Orkney. Easy access to all ferry terminals to explore the outer islands. The owner gave us a very warm welcome and was on hand to answer any queries. Highly recommended.

This is an outstanding value rental, with outstanding views across Scapa Flow and down to Orphir/Earl's Bu. Margaret has done just about everything possible to make your holiday relaxing. Fara Lodge is well appointed and with a well equipped kitchen. The place was spotless and you have no choice but to relax and unwind.
It is a great place to explore Mainland. You are also not far from either Kirkwall or Stromness if you want to go to other islands for a day.
The bedroom was very comfortable. We travelled as a couple but feel it would suit families as well.
We were only sorry we didn't find Jollys until half way throughout our stay but were able to enjoy scallops freshly landed on the morning of our visit to this great shop.

Had a week in the Cava Lodge in early July 2013. This was my 5th visit to Orkney, but 1st time at Scapa Flow Lodges. Of all the places we've stayed self catering, and not just on Orkney, this is up there with the best of the best. Beautiful views over Scapa Flow and Orphir, and immaculate, clean and modern inside. The owner, Margaret, was out when we arrived but had left the key in the door (as they do in these parts!), but came and welcomed us a short while later.

Very well equipped kitchen (an extra couple of washing & dishwasher tablets would be good), a beautiful bathroom with large bath and over shower, and 2 comfy bedrooms. Underfloor heating was a bonus (especially on the tiled bathroom floor), although not really needed in the good weather we had.

We never really sat in the upstairs mezzanine level - that was commandeered by our daughter! But for me, when sitting on the small sofa up there, my eye level was directly at the height of the railing, which in turn blocked out the view of the 2 windows. Whereas, downstairs we had clear views out of the patio doors.

Another welcome bonus was the free wifi - much appreciated as mobile phone / 3G signals are VERY intermittent around Orkney (I'm with Three, and my daughter was with Talktalk/Vodafone).

There was plenty to see from the Lodge - lots of small diving boats in Scapa Flow, Orkney Ferries 'Hoy Head' to Hoy and Pentland Ferries 'Pentalina' to Gills Bay, even a cruise liner passing through the Pentland Firth. Bird-wise, we had Hen Harrier within an hour of arriving in the field in front of the lodge, and lots of noisy Oystercatchers!

The lodge is equidistant from Stromness and Kirkwall - about 15 minutes to both. Overall location is good meaning it is easy to get to all parts of the islands.

We did a lot of birding on the island (saw Puffins at Yesnaby and Birsay), Short eared Owls at The Loons RSPB reserve, plenty of Common and Arctic Terns, and a couple of Red throated divers on some lochs nearby.

We ate in 2 nights (had a bbq on one of them - note - take your own disposable one), eating out we had good meals (and local ales) in the Stromness Hotel; Ferry Inn, Stromness; The Shore, Kirkwall and the Orkney Brewery (lunch - well worth the visit).

Other hints? If you want to go to Hoy with the car then book the ferry well in advance. We left it too late and couldn't get space to go over. Likewise for Maes Howe - it needs to be booked up for the guided tours.

All in, an excellent holiday. Margaret was very helpful and has a set of beautiful lodges for rent - I can definitely see us returning here.

We recently spent a week in Cava Lodge, which is modern, well-equipped and spotlessly-clean and has views across Scapa Flow that are to die for. It is well situated roughly half way between Kirkwall and Stromness which made touring the mainland very easy. The owner, Margaret, is a lovely lady who made us very welcome. Our only regret is that we stayed for just one week: next time we will go back for two, and will definitely be staying in one of the lodges when we do.
