Misono Hotel
Reviewed 7 January 2013

We spent two nights at Misono Hotel last September. Kawayu Onsen is conveniently located between Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu, allowing you to really enjoy the area.

The hotel is bigger than traditional ryokan so there are a lot of customers but the staff is always very friendly and helpful. The japanese-style room was one of the prettiest we've had in Japan, even if we didn't have a great view because we were on a lower floor. There was a lot of place in the room, and an ensuite bathroom.

There is also a shared onsen in the hotel which my fiance tried and found very nice. I didn't try it because we spent our days around Kussharo Lake where you can find a lot of free outdoor onsen so my feet had their share of hot water already^^ (I can only get my feet in there, it's always too hot for me)

The dinner was delicious, with many different japanese dishes to try, and different both nights. There is also a buffet where you can pick up potatoes, sashimi, etc. You cannot walk out of there still hungry, for sure ! There is also a japanese style breakfast in the morning with a little buffet too.

The location is really great. Kawayu Onsen itself is a nice little town where you can already smell the scent of sulfur from all the hot springs in the area. From there it's easy to go to Lake Kussharo , around which you can find many outdoor onsen with really nice views. There is also Iozan, a mountain where you can actually see hot vapors of sulfur coming out of the ground. And Lake Mashu, a crater lake which is often lost in the fog, but if you're lucky enough will offer you one of the most amazing views ever.

And to finish our visit of Akan National Park, the road taking you back to Sapporo goes just next to Lake Akan, so we were able to enjoy lunch with a nice view on the third lake !

Not speaking Japanese made it difficult for us to travel in Hokkaido, but Ms Kusano made our lives much easier in Kawayuonsen.

If you want to have a traditional Japanese hotel experience, this is the place. We went to Kawayuonsen because a mistake we made - not having an international driver's license ready. We had to rely on trains. We wanted to see Akan National Park and the lakes. We had to find out if there are tour buses available in the area and found that Kawayuonsen may have buses from our Lonely Planet. To be sure, we called Misono which is also recommended by Lonely Planet from Sapporo. Our hotel concierge in Sapporo helped us to find out the information from Ms Kusano at Misono. She confirmed there are buses going to the lakes. So we booked the hotel.

When we got to Misono, we got to meet Ms Kusano. We slowly explained to her what areas we wanted to see and our limitations by the train schedule. She patiently explained to us which bus to take, and what time to wait a the bus stop. She even found out for us that we could store our luggage with the tour operator at the train station so we wouldn't need to go back to the hotel. She went out of her way to stay overtime to help us to book the next hotel in Shiri, because we don't speak Japanese. We wouldn't have had a good time without her help!

We stayed in a traditional tatami room, which looked a bit worn, but it was clean. My husband had trouble sleeping on the futon mat on the hard floor, but we could have put down extra futon mat in the closet. Just didn't think of it at night. Our stay included a buffet dinner. It was wonderful! We haven't had such tasty fresh tomato in our lives. The food was abundant.

We both went to soak in the hot spring. Men and women are separate. It's definitely a culture experience. If wearing your birthday suit is difficult in front of all the people, then walking around the quiet street is another after dinner option.

The name Kawayu in kanji means "river of hot water" and that is what you find in the utterly charming, low key and relatively old (by modern Japanese tourism standards) onsen resort town situated in the easterly part of the Akan National Park. The Misono Hotel is one of the original of the "Modern" resort style ryokan in the area. It appears to be run by a family enterprise and that is the key to its success. Fifty years ago members of the Japanese royal family stayed there and photos of that event are proudly displayed in the corridors leading to the restaurant area (more like flexible dining rooms). The tariff includes a choice of Western-style (with tatami area as well) to tatami only rooms, and a buffet breakfast and an elaborate Japanese set menu for dinner. The meals were beautifully presented, and like all the resorts in the area, consisted mainly of various forms of seafood, which is presented on dishes of every size and shape - all of which compliment the food. The rooms all had new tatami mats and were clean and well supplied. The decor was a little tired, but going by the tatami mats (which are very expensive), I would guess that renovations are taking place gradually. The outstanding feature of this hotel is the warmth of the welcome and dedication to providing guests with a comfortable and memorable stay. Nothing was too much trouble and we were encouraged to bring our drinks down to the coffee shop and bar area, where the internet access is also situated. This same warmth and welcoming attitude is also reflected in the whole town. If you are prepared for very little English being spoken and a hotel loved by its elderly Japanese guests, then you would be amply rewarded as well as get a glimpse of the older onsen culture. One lovely surprise for us was being invited each evening to join the other guests in the traditional entertainment they themselves brought along to share after dinner. We stayed three nights here and will never forget the wonderful welcome we received.

The Misono is a large Japanese hotel consisting of a least three interconnecting blocks each with five floors. The majhority of the rooms are the traditional tatami matting layout, but I believe there are a few "western" type rooms. The rooms all have en-suite bathroom with a seperate toilet, but they look old and worn out. Our bathroom had the chrome plating on the taps worn away to the copper base plating, and the pipework appeared corroded. The dining room carpets also showed numerous stains.
The staff at the hotel were as can be expected in Japan, very polite and eager to please.
Outside the hotel the surrounding area has the smell of sulphur hanging about, from the numerous hot springs that belch out the element mixed with steam, but after the initial impact the smell becomes less noticeable.
