Kussharo Prince Hotel
Reviewed 9 August 2012

The Prince Hotel is perhaps the only western style hotel in this more remote region of Hokkaido situated right on what can only be described as one of Japan's loveliest and mysterious lakes. Prince Hotel is a great option for non Japanese speaking travellers that do not wish to stay in one of the nice bed and breakfast type inns scattered around the lake or at a Japanese style "ryokan".

The hotel is conveniently situated on the main highway as you come down from the top of Bihoro Toge (also worth a stop for souvenir shopping and a spectacular view of the lake) and is easy to find.

Prince Hotel also has a very good French style menu at the restaurant operated by the Hotel but situated next to it on the same property which requires a reservation made at least 3 days ahead of time for a French course. The basic French course cost 8,000 yen a person.

The hotel standard meal is buffet style which highlights Hokkaido produce. The dinner buffet is a popular with residents of the area and so it can get quite full. The highlight of the dinner buffet is the all you can eat crab.
Dinner Buffet: Adults 4,000 yen ($50), children 1,800 yen ($23)

We were the only foreigners staying at the hotel and it was packed solid so if you do choose to travel in Hokkaido be prepared for some communication challenges especially in this region. Keep in mind however that Japanese people are extremely kind and patient and will work very hard to ensure that you stay at this hotel is a good one.

If you bring children along inquire about the guided nature hikes and canoe trips. Although we did not take advantage of these they did offer a list of nature activities for children including fishing.

Onsen: This hotel also has a really nice Japanese style onsen that you will definitely enjoy.

Wine: The French restaurant will allow you to bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with the French style dinner at a charge negotiated at the time of reservation. The corkage varies based on the number of people in your group as well as whether or not you are a guest of the hotel and for how long. I would expect to pay somewhere around $25 a bottle.

We had a one-night stay at the Prince Hotel Kussharo and found it a perfectly enjoyable experience. Our room was a twin room B, booked directly through Prince Hotel's Singapore reservation office (they charge less than online agents or even the hotel's own Japanese website, as far as i could tell). The room was a good size by Japanese standards, immaculately clean, had a sofa bed, and most importantly, it had a lake front view of Lake Kussharo. Breakfast was in a large high-ceilinged hall with fantastic views of the autumnal leaves and mountains surrounding Lake Kussharo. We were travelling with 2 young children, and were pleased to find they had supplied mini-sized yukata (japanese bathrobes) and indoor slippers ! The kids also enjoyed strolling by the lake front in the morning - so quiet and peaceful ! For the price of the room plus breakfast, and compared to other properties in the Akan national park area, I'd say this is a really good deal.
