my wife and I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights 14/15 April. The king size room was basic with water stains on a large part of the ceiling. There was 1 shower gel which we used in the evening, leaving none for the morning. so I phoned reception to ask for some more while we were at dinner. On our return we found another 1. In the bar I ordered a tomato juice with the trimmings. The bar tender looked as though I had sworn at him and studiously consulted a folder, which I assume held details of cocktails.
After a while he gave up and asked me what it was so I told him. He then disappeared for 5 minutes and came back with a stick of celery, which he rammed into the glass poured in the tomato juice and tobacco. I asked where the Worcester sauce was, and he informed me that there wasn't any.

The rooms heating was inadequate, and there was no heating in the bathroom.

The food was reasonable as were most of the staff, but value for money it certainly wasn't.

We stayed a couple of weeks earlier at Horsley Lodge Hotel -which you can almost see from the Marriot. If you don't want a pool ( which is always filled with children having swimming lessons) you will get much better value there.

Fabulous, extensive grounds, helpful staff and lots of them, very comfortable bed and faultless food, so not really anything to grumble about! However, I picked this place because I like country house hotels with some style and elegance, and this rather falls down in these respects. The 'medieval origins' are really nothing more than a single arch in the basement and the Victorian industrialist who built the place clearly had more money than taste. But what is intersting about the hotel is that guests really do not get to see the grand reception rooms as they are given over to functions and seminars. Instead, the guests are confined to a distinctly underwhelming room for the bar and dine in what is essentially the basement. Maybe I am being a little over-critical and, as I said earlier, in every other respect, this place has much to commend it.

Room Tip: I had a room in the main (old) building which was delightful, but there is no lift and lots of stair...

I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in March during a business trip to Derbyshire. As you turn into the drive way of this hotel in the evening, you are immediately impressed with the grounds. It is as if you just arrived at a fairytale castle. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful. My room was located near the Pub (good location for any room). My only complaint is that it was wheel chair accessible. The room was large, but plain, bed not so comfortable. However, the grounds were magnificent and the breakfast was superb. The pub fare was very good (really good pizza and beer). I highly recommend staying here, it is a real treat.

We stopped here as a break from our travel back from Wales. On arrival the grounds looked very nice and well kept. The hotel doesn't have an elevator which is fine considering it's the oldest Marriott. We were able to check in early without problem and had a lovely picnic in the gardens. Then ventured to the pool area, and we were happy to see and enjoy the whirlpool, steam, sauna rooms. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because it did need some updating, and the gardens although were nice they easily could be wonderful.

Went for a friends 50th and a round of golf. The latter was superb - the less expensive of the two courses was a joy to play and on a Saturday lunchtime was virtually deserted.

The party was also fine and the service very good.

However, breakfast the following morning was utter chaos with some people waiting 90 minutes to be seated. Being put in a holding area led to us and about 30 others then getting ignored as others just showed up at the restaurant and were given tables. The people in the queue behind us were still waiting when we had finished our breakfast and were leaving When we complained the staff were not just unapologetic but actually rude back.

A really beautiful spot with georgous grounds and a fab golf course if that's your thing. We stayed db&b for the weekend. Food was lovely, sounds fussy but the plates were always cold! Rump steak was just perfect. Rooms in the new building are ok but just a little bit tired, would however recommend for a weekend away. Chatsworth house is amazing and really nearby the hotel is kedleston hall which has a great woodland/lake walk, worth looking around the house and only about a tender each.

This was a last minute break booked the night before our stay. The pictures do not do the building and it's surroundings justice. Our room had 2 double beds and the beds were very comfy and you get a choice of pillows of which there were plenty. We enjoyed just relaxing in the spa and a walk around the grounds. The priory attracts lots of golfers but to be fair the golf course adds to the views and there's lots of little walks away from them if you want that. The tempo bar was quite busy with golfers too but it's thanks to them that the place is kept busy. The food was excellent we went for the romance package which included champagne, chocolates and strawberries and rose petals on the bed. If would have been a nice touch to include robes and slippers but never mind. We had 3 course evening meal and breakfast included and the food and staff were both excellent and plenty of choice. The bar prices were not the cheapest but it's what you expect in these type of hotels and we both had a treatment at the health and beauty barn, again the staff were very attentive. Overall we really enjoyed it and would definitely return and would say ignore the negative remarks. The building is over 500 year old in parts so what do you expect, the communal areas and grounds were well maintained and very clean. It's also a good base for exploring surround areas. Probably the only negative is that due to all the added buildings connecting onto the main house and stairs it's not ideal for wheelchair users.
