As a family of four, we stayed for three nights and found this to be an excellent hotel in every respect. Rooms and en-suites are very well appointed and spotless. All the staff we met were first class - even down to a barman who had just appeared on one evening knowing my name. The food both at dinner and at breakfast was delicious and very well presented. The hotel prides itself (justifiably) on its environmental credentials. Its location may be a bit out of the way from the main routes but the diversion is well worth while. We would certainly return.

We attended and enjoyed immensely, the annual Northumberland Association dinner that was held last week at Battlesteads. The food - all local - and wonderfully prepared and well served was outstanding. However, the truly impressive aspect of “Battlesteads” is the foresight and daring of the owners that have invested in real “green” technologies and practises. The tour of the bio heating system and extensive market gardens is not to be missed. The hotel is on the forefront of providing a superb local, gastronomic experience whilst operating a carbon-neutral sustainable business. Battlesteads is wonderful example of what can be achieved in being “Green” without sacrificing great hospitality. On the contrary it shows how green practises enhances the entire experience.

Earlier reviews say it all, so we were not dissapointed. The staff were there to serve you and would put most 4/5 star hotels to shame. Mike keeps his beer in excellent condition, the food is first class (sourced from local suppliers) and we were provided with a very comfortable and spacious room. All in all a most enjoyable experience.

We arrived past 11pm and were still greeted warmly by the owners. Dog was most welcome too! Despite the late hour we were asked if we would like to have any food prepared and the bar was open. Tidy, warm, welcoming rooms, which were of a good size. No bath but large walk in shower rooms with lots of towels (and soap made to a Roman recipe!). Not 6star standard of finish but excellent value for money, with kettles, fridge, fruit, bottled water, biscuits and flowers in the rooms - the works. Comfortable beds with plenty of bedding. In the morning a super full breakfast in a beautifully finished conservatory, overlooking an enclosed garden full of birds, complete with binoculars. Highly recommend it. Electric point to charge a car too.

Fantastic hotel with MORE THAN obliging staff. The place had great charm and character with a strong green influence, caring wholeheartedly for the environment. Our room was well presented and spotlessly clean, with nice touches like fresh fruit and bottle water as well as the usual tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Food in the dining room was all locally sourced and cooked to an exceptionally high standard. Would stay again without hesitation!

Arrived Jan 5th 2011. Read about it in the Good Pub Guide as we traveled from Edinburgh to Fowey, Cornwall. Wanted to see Hadrian's Wall and fortifications.
The rooms were superb, clean, bright, good showers (plural), the detail amazing - walkers had places to put muddy boots in an otherwise immaculate room. Fast wired broadband and also good wireless for use in the bar but correctly, NOT in the dining room. How good is that?
Can't say enough good things about the restaurant or the Chef (Eddie). How many other quality restaurants do you have the Chef join you in the bar for a food discussion and then sneak off to bring you back extra special "tastes" from the huge garden. All the staff were excellent, efficient and good company. Very sorry not to meet the owners but the landlord was apparently unwell while we were there.
The breakfast room is a huge conservatory looking out over the walled herb garden with a sprinkling of bird books and binoculars around the window edges to allow us Aussie travelers to bone up on English bird life during breakfast.
A quick look at the many road atlases in reception before we set off and we left uplifted.
Thank you Battlesteads.
