Booked a 2 night excellent deal here to celebrate my guy's big 60. What a great choice....the food is superb...I had gravadlax then confit duck leg...delish. He had ribeye.....actually sent the first one back as it was rather gristly...but his second, swiftly served, was great and to me the mark of a good restaurant is how they handle a complaint...and this was well handled.Second night I had pear, brie and walnut salad and scallops from the starter menu for main, with a side order of parmesan and truffle chips...he had gammon...both meals excellent.Breakfast menu has just about anything you could want....and gorgeous little kilner jars of preserves..do try the lemon & lavender.Comfortable room ...great memory foam mattress.Lovely ambience in the bar area with wood burning stove and leather sofas you can sink into. The owners used to run the Magnesia Bank in North Shields about 7 years ago and have definitely made The Battlesteads a great place for a chill out break. If you like to walk do try the 3 mile round trip to Hareshaw Linn waterfall....superb.We'll come back here in the summer to enjoy the outside areas and garden.

Room Tip: We were in room 16 which had 2 windows..one overlooking the back car park and the other a side view...

Just back from spending an overnight stay there and would certainly recommend.
A cosy retreat with warm hospitality and good food and drink.
A little cramped in the bar and main course not at the same level as the starter and dessert, but having said that soup was superb and the selection of ice creams really interesting..............try the lemon curd one mmmmmm

Room Tip: Try one of the several regional real ales

This was a late booking as we only booked on Christmas day and arrived on the 27th December for 2 nights - We received a very warm welcome and found the place warm, friendly, relaxing and with wonderful attentive friendly staff and the food was fabulous - both at breakfast and for evening meals - we ate at Battlesteads both nights and it was superb.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Battlesteads to anyone - they even allow dogs to stay although we didn't take our dog on this occasion.

Hexham is the nearest town around 12 miles away and was lovely - we had some nice walks along Hadrians Wall and The Housesteads Roman Settlement. Kielder Water is also worth visiting whilst in the area - which is Europes largest man made reservoir.

Very good food and service, log fire and comfortable sofas in lounge, just the things for a
short break away. Great location to explore Northumberland. Comfortable and very clean rooms
only a very tiny criticism that my wife needed a mirror in room rather than bathroom but as i have said everything else first class.

Spent a long week-end meeting up with old friends. Beautiful location for visiting Hadrian's wall and the Roman museums. The warm welcome, comfortable room, and excellent food more than made up for the cold weather. The bar atmosphere with fine beer and a blazing log fire made it all the much better. Wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Room Tip: The hotel is pet friendly, but pets appear to be restricted to ground floor rooms. Consider uppersta...

Stayed here last night with my Husband as a treat for my Birthday and had a wonderful experience. There was a warm welcome from the moment we stepped through the door, the log fire was blazing in the bar and locals and residents were having a drink in the company of their pet dogs. We were shown to our room and found that we had been upgraded from a double to a suite which was a very unexpected surprise. The hotel was quiet as expected this time of year but the staff were still very attentive. There was a good selection of beverages in the room, fresh fruit & biscuits. Lovely thick fluffy towels in the bathroom along with organic toiletries and a most pleasing Jacuzzi. The bed was very comfortable and the room was well furnished and lovely and warm as the temperature outside had dropped. Staff explained how all the amenities worked and also advised us that mobiles can't be used as there is no signal in Wark but we could use the landline for a small cost. There is free Wifi throughout the building plus a laptop for customers to use in the bar. Our evening meal did not dissappoint with plenty of choice and delicious canapes to whet our appetite. I had scallops with home made black pudding as a starter then confit of duck leg with peas and mash followed by mixed berry pavlova all washed down by a good house red. My Husband had mixed smoked meats, cheese & fish as a starter then confit of belly pork followed by strawberry cheesecake. We awoke to a Winter Wonderland this morning as everywhere was covered in frost outside but the sun was shining. After a hearty Full English breakfast in the conservatory looking out into the garden which is alive with little birds attacking the numerous feeders and fat balls etc, we checked out at 10am having had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

This hotel lived up to my expectations having read other reviews. Staff very friendly and helpful. Shown to room on arrival and advised re amenities in room. Extra touches in rooms such as home made biscuits, fresh fruit and beautiful toiletries. The room was comfortable and well decorated.
Our evening meal was a little disappointing, we both had the Northumbrian ribeye steak both requesting medium done, mine came out rare as it was a thicker cut than my partners. The fries were cold and both had to go back, promptly reappearing having been nuked. We also had to experience the tables around us being set out for breakfast while we were still seated. However breakfast was excellent and again staff were friendly and polite. Maybe we both chose badly the night before and the resturant did appear very busy, so may have been having a bad night. It will not stop us returning or recommending it
