We stayed here for our anniversary using an online offer. There is no mobile phone signal in Wark so it was wonderful to escape from people who cannot put their phones down and enjoy their surroundings!

The staff members, without exception, are friendly, welcoming and helpful. They had made a note when we booked that it was our anniversary and they congratulated us when we arrived.

We stayed in the superior room as a treat, which was comfortable and quiet even with the garden under our window.

The food is excellent. For the first night, we had the seven course taster menu with accompanying wines. I don't normally eat dessert, but they were fabulous! Wonderful wines to accompany each course too. The second night we chose from the menu and really enjoyed our choices alongside a bottle of our favourite wine from the night before.

The hotel is rightly proud of its green credentials - it has a walled garden to sit in when the weather allows and grows much of its own fruit and vegetables. Binoculars are provided if you want to do some bird or squirrel watching.

I loved this hotel and we will definitely be back.

Stayed for 2 nights for a walking trip. Lovely breakfast, fantastic staff that are supremely friendly and helpful, lovely location, good choice of beers, all round very very good and you won't be disappointed. The rooms were nice, great tea making facilities with nice big cups which you don't get often, but let down by the bathroom which was plastic walls and floor.

We stayed at this small hotel (or pub) for two nights in June/July 2014, and found both the food and the accommodation to be excellent. Clean, comfortable, quiet at night. Even though the hotel was small, it certainly had style and a touch of class. The hanging baskets outside the pub, full of blooms, made the place quite beautiful. It was a pleasure to be there.

Another thing that I really liked about this hotel was that the owner understands that some of his/her guests might wish to read in bed. Accordingly, they have provided a good system of lighting at the head end of the bed to make this possible. Too few hotels in the UK understand the desire of some guests to read in bed (a hobby-horse of mine). Battlesteads is one of the few hotels that do understand, and they have provided the necessary lighting.

Wark is a beautiful village, as is the surrounding countryside. After Dinner, I recommend a short and leisurely walk (~300 metres) down the slight hill to watch the mighty and beautiful North River Tyne flowing past. Either from the bridge, or from the lane that runs past the village school.

A little tip. If you go onto the Battlesteads website, you can sometimes find a special mid-week offer. That is what we did, and we saved ourselves £120 by doing so.

Arrived for a 2 night stay on 25th June at 3.15pm, when a young man arrived at the reception to check us in we asked if we could get a snack as we had been travelling for 3hrs, but were told the kitchen closed at 3pm. We later discovered in the room info that room service could be had between 11am and 11pm! Not the best of starts. We ate in the restaurant both nights and found the food and the service exceptional. The rooms are clean but nothing special which is a shame.

When we first drew up outside this hotel we thought "oh no, this looks like another, albeit attractive, country pub trying to pass itself off as an hotel". We were wrong!
We were greeted warmly at reception and shown to our room (Room 15). It was a revelation: huge, light, well appointed and freshly decorated. Without going into too much detail, there was a settee, large flat screen tv, plenty of wardrobe space and even a bowl of fresh fruit on the coffee table. The large modern bathroom was superb, with its whirlpool bath separate shower cubicle and generous supply of toiletries. The free wifi reception was excellent but there is no mobile phone reception in the locality (probably a blessing!).

We were booked in for the tasting menu at dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the courses were very good and were served at just the right intervals to make for a very relaxing and enjoyable meal. All the food here is sourced locally, either from the hotel's own gardens or local suppliers.

Next morning, we both agreed that the breakfast taken in the conservatory overlooking the garden was the best we have ever had at an hotel. The home made black pudding and the field mushrooms deserve special mention!

The hotel also deservedly takes special pride in its green credentials which are to be applauded.

Battlestead deserves full marks, particularly at its very reasonable rates. We would certainly stay here again and regretted that we had booked in for only one night.

Room Tip: Room 15 ("Chipchase") is one to go for.

Stayed on a Thursday night whilst touring Northumbria with the benefit of a TravelZoo voucher including a seven course tasting menu. The building is a charming old fashioned country inn type hotel which is very well appointed. The restaurant was equally well appointed and separate from a very large conservatory where breakfast and if wanted dinner can be taken. The conservatory looks out onto a beautifully maintained walled garden housing patio seating and a large fixed feature type gazebo. The hotel has its own garden in which it grows its own vegetables and focuses on a serious Eco friendly approach. Attention to detail is clearly a consideration here and I found the same applied to the rooms. The downside I am afraid has been the construction of the bedrooms which are not noise insulated in any way thereby producing disturbances from the trafficking and housing of other guests.
The food served for the tasting menu was excellent and whilst the tasting portions are quite small they were extremely tasty and the other meals being served from the main menu also appeared to be of very good quality.
This was a very pleasant visit and I would have no hesitation in recommending Battlesteads to other readers.

We met family at Battlesteads for a 2 night stay earlier this month and had a wonderful time. Andrew on reception was very helpful from the minute we arrived and it was lovely to have fresh fruit as well as "proper" coffee and a cafetiere in our room. Some reviewers complain that the rooms are small, however as it is an old building this is understandable, all our rooms were adequate and very clean. We had dinner both nights and the food was exceptional, the chef came out and chatted with us during the evening and even prepared a dish not on the menu, especially for us, when we discovered that one of the dishes was not available. The breakfasts were also very good and the star of the show was definitely our waitress Raluka, who did everything possible to make us feel welcome and made sure that we had a wonderful, relaxing time. We hope it won't be too long before we are back again to enjoy another short break at the hotel.
