A very nice hotel in a peaceful locations. the staff were friendly, the rooms was comfortable with everything one could wants. there is a large restaurant, with good local produce. a 'green' approach seems to be a key focus for this hotel and it is evident throughout. Lots of car parking.

No negatives.

We stayed two nights at Battlesteads. on the positive side the hotel was comfortable and friendly. The view from the room was of a roof and a giant array of solar panels. This is an eco hotel and at least they get past the now normal request not to change your towels and actually try to make the hotel carbon neutral. Wifi was effective in the room which was great!
Breakfast was really good, but the croissants had disappeared really early on each day.
We had dinner at the hotel one night, the food was good, though I was not that impressed with the fajitas, which were artistically presented, gut nothing special. Desserts were excellent.
One point about he room, the bed was only 4 ft 6 ins and thus quite narrow, though the room would not have taken a bigger bed. Overall I would be happy to go back.

Room Tip: Ask about the size of the bed.

The Battlesteads Hotel is in a great location for visiting Hadrian's Wall. That was the main reason we booked. Also, because it had been getting so many excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and had been included in Alastair Sawday's Guide. However, our experience there left a lot to be desired. On arriving and parking round the back, we entered a very poky and dark corridor leading to a scruffy reception desk. The receptionist was on the phone for several minutes and ignored us, even though she realised we needed to check in. She eventually got a junior member of staff to take us to our rooms.

The room corridor upstairs features a very worn and dirty blue carpet, which is as depressing as the cheap lino downstairs. The rooms themselves have comfortable beds, do offer tea and coffee making facilities and fresh fruit as has been mentioned in previous reviews, but for a hotel boasting its environmentally friendly attributes, the windows were cheap PVC, now recognised as being harmful to the environment, and the bathrooms were covered entirely with plastic panels. And unfortunately, if you open the windows at night, which during the summer would be the norm, the noise from the cars outside seems to start before 6.00 AM.

The food is good and at times very good, but again the dining room lets itself down with worn pine chairs and a very 1980s style conservatory. Also for a hostelry which describes itself as a hotel, there should be a comfortable area for guests to have tea and a snack apart from the bar. All the other inns we stayed at during our driving trip offered a comfortable and cosy area to have afternoon tea, read a newspaper or a book or just relax.

The Battlesteads Hotel is in a great location. Walkers and those interested in history will continue to want to visit this part of Cumbria. It serves up good food and great breakfasts. What it really needs to do is to spend some money refurbishing the whole place, and to get their staff to be more welcoming to guests.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights in early august. We were in room 6 (the yellow room) which was very nicely decorated, and had a nice clean bathroom. We had a bowl of fruit which was a nice touch, and the bed was large and comfortable. We booked through booking.com and actually booked the deluxe room with the spa bath. Although this was clearly stated on our booking conformation, the hotel had no record of this and had other guests in this room. It wasn't a major issue, but was a little disappointing.

We ate in the restaurant on the first night. The mains and puddings were both very tasty and full of flavour. The wine was nice, but a little expensive by the glass. We had to ask for tap water three times before it arrived at the table and were then asked for a donation during our meal.

Breakfast was very good, and had a nice selection available.

Overall a nice hotel, but was a little overpriced.

We stayed in the family room for a night on our way North after a day at Hadrian's Wall. The room was not huge, but very comfortable and nicely decorated and the activity bags for the children were a nice touch. We ate in the restaurant - fantastic choice and delicious food. Breakfast the next morning was also varied and really good. Service was absolutely excellent throughout, and very friendly.
