My husand and I have just returned from a very pleasant stay at the Battlesteads. Our room was lovely with a view and although it was the main road we did not find it too noisy. The restaurant meals were delicious and the staff were very friendly. There are a couple of pubs, a butchers and a grocery store in the village but apart from that it is very quiet. The hotel is very well positioned for all of the Hadiran Wall sites. Corbirdge, Hexham and Brapmton are all well worth a visit. Corbridge + Brampton being our favourites, very oldy worldy. Definitely would stay here again.

The management and staff were very friendly. The room was clean and fit for purpose.
The restaurant menu included a duck dish which apparently takes three days to prepare and cook.. It was delicious.
Having just finished a good evening meal, we found it slightly discombobulating to be pressed for our choices on the the following morning's breakfast menu. This is presumably for the benefit of the chef, although the menu did not include anything which could not have been prepared within a few minutes of ordering. However this is a minor complaint. The breakfast was, as they say, hearty.

We found the details of this place in the Good Pub Guide and it appealed to us straight away. We weren't disappointed!
Room not large but very comfortable and snug. Excellent bathroom with green toiletries laid on.
Big comfy bar with fire, sofas and free internet access. Just the ticket for a cold winter evening.
Dinner very good - great choice. Breakfast in beautiful conservatory. Lovely selection of locally-sourced dishes too.
Birds flocking round the feeders in the garden were a nice distraction.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay even though it was only one night - recommended.
Surrounding area (Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Water) stunning.

We wanted a break from our usual Christmas in Scotland, but without the black tie dinner dances and Santa Specials offered by so many hotels. Battlesteads was just what we needed. Excellent food in relaxed and comfortable surroundings, friendly locals in the bar in the evening, and lots of opportunities for bracing walks on Hadrian's Wall or elsewhere - Kielder Forest is close by. Hexham Abbey is close enough for the morning service, and interesting small towns like Corbridge are within easy distance.

The hotel's 'green' philosophy is excellent on many counts, including lovely locally-sourced toiletries in refillable bottles. The small garden has an array of birdfeeders, and it would be possible to spend an entire morning watching the wide variety of birdlife visiting them.

  • Liked — Friendly, relaxed. Free internet access a bonus
  • Disliked — Didn't bother us at all, but people should know there is no mobile phone signal in the village

What a fantastic place and location. We spent Xmas Eve and day at Battlesteads and had one of the nicest Xmas we ever had, the staff went out of their way to make sure we felt at home and had a good time, nothing was too much trouble, the room was spotless and very comfortable. The food was excellent and we had such a good time weve decided to get married here.

My wife and I were visiting from Australia and had the pleasure of staying at this lovely hotel. My wife was in a wheel chair at the time and the staff went out of their way to make her feel welcome and comfortable. The food was first class and the chef should be listed as a national treasure. Try the locally smoked fish for breakfast- kippers or haddock? - I couldn't decide so had both each morning. The draught beer is also kept in remarkably good nick and adds fully to the quality of the stay as do the locals who are friendly and highly entertaining. We'll visit again stock market permitting!

We visited this hotel set in a small village in Northumberland after reading a review in a national newspaper. It was everything it promised to be.....warm & welcoming with cosy bar and great real ales. The restaurant serves locally sourced produce and the desserts are to die for (the owner has won awards for them). The rooms are simply furnished with state of the art tv and lwe had a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi together with lashings of hot water. The breakfast was one of the best i've ever had and everyone from the manager to the chef made us feel so welcome. One word of warning though.....if you are addicted to your mobile phone..there is no signal in Wark!!
