First of all, Bar el Refugio is not in Sabinillas, so don't venture there and expect to find this little gem of a bar and tapas spot. It sits on the opposite side of Puerto de la Duquesa in a small square facing a church. It is quite possibly the best place to people watch as there always seems to be something going on in the local area. Last night it was the comings and goings from the church, we think it might have been a communion but it was great to see locals all dressed up and milling around the vicinity. The bar itself is run by a family and they put out great food from a really small kitchen. We have never been disappointed in what we have ordered and our recent visit was no exception. Prawns pil pil, Russian salad, chorizo, chicken curry and a Spanish style hot dog along with French fries and chips went down a treat with a few beers. It is great value for money as well. You might find it difficult to get a seat because those of us in the know go early but even if you have to sit inside you will be impressed by the internal decor which along with the menu is a homage to Cervantes Don Quixote.
