“Third visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2013

This was the third time we had called here for lunch on our way to Stratford and we have been more than satisfied on each occasion. Well cooked and presented food plus a pleasant welcome made for a good experience overall.

All started well with a young smiley waitress looking after us.
We then ordered a bottle of wine which was opened on its way to the table by an older lady and plonked in front of us. NOT GOOD. No showing the bottle and no offer to taste. Also it was on the cool side.
The scallop starter was fine and the mains were OK ( I had lamb which was fine, my wife had the fish with too much mash.)
The desserts were a disaster; two types of creme brule, one coffee and the other coffee liqueur !! we tried one but it was pretty inedible.
The front of house lady wasn't really suited to the role.
We won't rush back sadly

The Peacock had been on our radar for several months but events had conspired to us having to cancel 2 previous bookings so anticipation was high when we finally arrived! I was dining with a group of friends and my trac=velling companion was on crutches so after negotiating the steps to the entrance we were gutted to find we were in the snug, not the restaurant Not a problem as we were ushered behind the bar to the restaurant. Service was attentive and after the bread and oils whilst ordering we opted for mains as we are all suckers for dessert! However prtions were so generous we couldn't manage desserts and opted for coffees which came with the most devine chocolate truffles. When one of the group dropped her truffle on the floor we jokingly asked for a replacement, not a problem as 6 more truffles were brought! I think we were the last to leave but at no time were made to feel unwanted. We have already booked to return next month.

Room Tip: Only ate in the restaurant, didn't stay overnight.

I had high expectations on entering the beautiful old building to be warmed by an open fire which we were seated next to. The atmosphere was inviting and I couldn't wait to sample the food which is the creation of a french chef, and judging by the prices I thought I was in for a treat.
The bread arrived which was fresh and tasty and satiated our appetites, which is just as well as it did take a while for the first course to arrive. My chicken liver parfait was smooth and well flavoured and finsished to a high standard but the toast let the dish down as it clearly came from a standard supermarket loaf. My Partner's tomato tarte-tatin could only be the invention of a poor chemistry student. Where there should have been pastry there was unsalted mash potato, and where you'd have expected caramelised balsamic there was a runny and vinegary dressing. He couldn't eat it, the combination was too odd; sun-dried toms, mash and vinegar. We complained to the manageress who was apologetic but amazingly told us that it was one of their more popular starters and the "rosti" (ha!) was not an unusual alternative to the traditional pastry base. It wasn't even a rosti.
We waited quite a while for our medium rare Sunday 'roast' sirloin so tucked in enthusiastically when it finally arrived. In my opinion the 'roast' was VERY rare, gristly and tasteless. Five roasties is way too much (left 3 each) and the 'rich gravy' hadn't been reduced enough to give it a rich flavour. The yorkshire was well risen and crispy but it tasted sweet. I was disappointed but hungry so we ate it without complaining. Please bear in mind this is a £14 plate of food.
We didn't feel confident about ordering a dessert so just had coffee which arrived in an already plunged cafetiere. Needless to say it was not properly brewed and had been plunged too quickly as there were coffee grounds in my cup.
I've dined and chef'd in some very high class places and so was expecting, for the price, that The Peacock Inn would deliver me a tasty and creative meal. Not so. I actually think it's a shame because this place has loads of potential to be a fine dining restaurant or a gastro pub, however it falls quite a bit short of either. Better than a harvester (only just) but not outstanding by any means. I reckon Chef Jean can do much better. Get rid of the English element and give us some well executed french dishes. Yum!

We booked a table of four for a birthday treat.

Three starters of scallops on a bed of butternut squash puree, and a salmon carpaccio. All were delicious.

Mains were two turbot filets with a haddock sweet and spicy fishcake, one chicken dish and king prawn, scallop and salmon skewers. Lots of delicious seasonal veg on the plate, along with sides of chips and veg.

Believe it or not, we even managed a sweet!! Three delicous chocolate concoctions plus a cheese plate, followed with coffee for three and mints.

With three pints of finest bitter, two soft drinks and water, the bill came to £168.30, which for the quality was excellent.

We always find the staff very friendly and attentive.

A really lovely evening out, we even had a drink outside before setting off home.

We needed accommodation near Shelsley Walsh for four nights and just happened to find this wonderful inn on the Internet. We certainly hit the jackpot! Our room was delightful - very comfortable with a four poster bed & en suite shower room. Attention to detail made all the difference - a tea/coffee tray with fresh milk, plenty of tea bags, a cafetiere filled with fresh coffee grounds, two bottles of water and even a selection of nibbles and a Mars bar! Also the soap and shower goodies were from the White Company. A great touch.
We arrived in time for dinner - the food at The Peacock is superb. The chef/proprietor Jean is French and this is reflected in the quality of his cooking. Every meal we had including breakfast was delicious.
The staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We asked if they were open for dinner on Sunday evening. The restaurant was closed for a private function but they insisted on offering us a full menu in the bar.
This is somewhere we will definitely return to and would strongly recommend.
