“Traditional Scottish Country House”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2014

We booked The Lands of Loyal for our wedding anniversary. The approach to the hotel is quite stunning. A magnificent country house in lovely gardens with panoramic views. The main hall which awaits is equally stunning and true to its Scottish roots. The centre piece is a huge feature fireplace with a roaring log fire and sitting in this historical setting, taking a drink of your choice served in cut glass, is wonderful.

The restaurant was delightful. The menu was limited and not sufficiently extensive to cater for all tastes, but was a good standard. Wine list reasonable with a middle of the road Rioja priced at £18.

We booked a superior room in the main hotel but on arrival we were placed in a suite in the adjoining coach house. The downside for us was the suite was a fully equipped disabled suite and all that comes with it. Yes very spacious but not in keeping with our expectation of a romantic getaway.

The hotel is very popular with hunters and attracts many foreign visitors with such an interest. Quite a remote location, very peaceful but not far from many interesting places such as Glamis Castle, Scone Palace etc. Not walking distance to the local pub but the hotel has a characteristic traditional Scottish bar, though service was a bit hit and miss. Overall an interesting experience and very good value for money.

Room Tip: A room in the main house

We visited Lands of Loyal for my husbands birthday on Sunday 29th December 2013. We have visited before a few years ago and remember the food being fantastic, along with the interior, service and drinks and wanted to go back. We are Scottish but now live in Central London and love good food. We were again delighted with the interior (wood panel hall, huge Christmas tree etc) and service but the food seriously was underwhelming. The menu was very simple and bland. Nothing like the menu a few years ago. I had the goats cheese starter which was literally a goats cheese in breadcrumbs deep fried. My husband had the filo pheasant which was very average. My main was the sea bass which came with a very odd cold tomato salsa on the top. My husband had the pork loin which was like a very basic roast dinner. In all honesty we could have cooked a better meal at home. A disappointing culinary experience. The service was fantastic and the actual lodge is gorgeous. This place could be so fantastic if they employed a top quality chef.

We had lunch on Xmas day and it was superb. Menu had good choice, food was wonderfully cooked and presented and service was attentive without being over the top. House is beautiful and staff and Management were excellent, very helpful and pleasant. Meal wasn't cheap of course but for a lovely meal on Xmas day we felt it was worth the cost for a special occasion.

We came up and visited The Lord of Lands when visiting clients and the place is excellent.

The setting resembles a traditional shooting lodge, with an opulent hall and roaring fire.

The staff are very attentive and the owner was happy to show us around his newly installed wood chip fired boiler.

The food and drink was sublime and for four of us with drink was great value.

I would certainly recommend the restaurant despite not staying in the hotel.

Returned to Lands of Loyal this time for Christmas Day lunch and it was as good as anticipated. The setting in the wood panelled hall with a magnificent Christmas tree together with the warm greeting set the scene. Lunch was served on the dot of the time it had been ordered with such pleasant cheerful service. The menu was varied but our choices were excellent and the helping generous without being excessive. Each course was served seamlessly but not too quickly. For an event where a good number of guests had to be served similtaneously the food was good although the 'boozy' trifle seemed to have missed out on the Drambuie and the syrup served with the excellent Christmas pudding was lacking in taste, these were very minor points. The service was five star.

We went there last night for a christmas meal with friends. First impressions the entrance was festive and welcoming, inside in the sumptuous lounge it was beautifully decorated and the tree was beautiful. We have been many times and it just gets better. It has the look of a traditional christmas. The meal was very good and the service couldn't have been better. I can't recommend it high enough.

Not been for a while - and when I heard the previous owners had returned I had to revisit - in particular to see the Christmas tree...

The food was back to the great standards - though I did think the Christmas menu was a little restrictive for anyone with a nut alergy - all but one of the main courses had some sort of nuts in them.

Good portion size and OK service during the meal - but was a little lacking once back in the hall - but it was a Sunday night and they'd had a busy day..... It would of been nice if the staff actually looked up and around as they went through the hall.... Suppose I should of shouted or whistled!

Will certainly be back from time to time...

(just in for meal)
