Thank you Keiko and Tomimo for a memorable stay - we only wished we had arranged a two night stay instead of one. We were greeted with seaweed tea and soba noodle sweets on arrival (both were delicious). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the room was very comfortable and clean - we slept very soundly. We chose the Matsu course dinner and were delighted with the private dinning, our host Keiko and the food. We specifically came with an open mind and wanted to try the various Japanese foods, I loved that I ate things I would not normally at home - and - it was delicious! I especially loved the tea which Keiko gave me some extra on our departure which I now drink at home and remember our stay. We enjoyed all the onsens in the public bathhouses and had fun collecting the stamps, We completed our evening with the the private one on site at Matsuya - it was fantastic and would rate it the best. The next morning I had time to look at some of the shops before a large spread was laid out for breakfast then Tomimo took us up to the Monkeys and then kindly dropped our luggage to be minded for us close to the station. The monkeys did not dissapoint and were amazing- there was a pretty scenic walk through the woods back down to the bus to take us to the station before heading out.... I had read a lot of reviews about Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen before our trip and laboured over which place to book. I am extremely happy that we chose Matsuya. The friendly hosts who have right to be proud of their establishment, the comfort, food and location made it good value for money. I would not pay more for one of the larger establishments and then miss out on the personal experience.
We would reccommend this place to anyone wanting a true Japanese traditional experience.

Dear TracyLSydney

Thank you very much for your staying and many kind words .
We're very happy to hear you say so .
How is the Japanese roasted tea to drink in your hometown?
You were interested in Japan very much and enjoyed your stay in my ryokan.
We are looking forward to seeing you again.

We really, really enjoyed our stay at Senshinkan Matsuya. The hosts are wonderful! They helped us when we first arrived to drive us back to Yudanaka to get money from the 7-11, as it was a long weekend and we wouldn't have had money if we didn't get it right then! The welcome sesame sweet and tea I am still dreaming about!! The rooms are very spacious and the bedding is so comfortable. They explained how the hot springs work and showed us how to don a yakuta properly :) The hot spring bath in the hotel was my favorite of them all. So relaxing and peaceful. I wish I had gone in earlier. We had wonderful traditional breakfasts here and one traditional dinner which was for just the 2 of us in a tatami room. The food was delicious. They really were so sweet and accommodating, and it was a fun place to stay.

A long overdue review! Myself and my girlfriend spent two nights here in August and couldn't have asked for more. Although, like most, we would probably have liked to visit in winter, we were lucky enough to experience the towns summer festival! Wooden games and people in yukatas lined the streets; it was really nice. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, perfect hosts. The monkeys are of course amazing and you can get a lift up to them (As mentioned before the forest walk down is quite nice too). There isn't a huge amount to do in the small town but it is perfect for a relaxing weekend. There are nine baths which are worth the visit (if only to stamp the bath towel) and an interesting sake and beer brewery close by. Restaurants around the town are good and cheap (don't expect anything fancy though). Definitely recommend having the traditional japanese dinner and breakfast (once) in the ryokan. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone visiting Japan.

Dear AranBrady

Thank you very much for your kind words .

In this summer, we enjoyed Japanese summer festival together.
The foreign visitor rarely visits here in summer.
However, in this village, we hold SHIBU-ONSEN SUMMER FESTIVAL every day in August.
I want more foreigners to enjoy Japanese summer festival with us.

We are looking forward to seeing you again.
Please take good care of yourself.

We spent two nights here, which was perfect. The hosts are both very helpful and friendly. They'll collect you from the train station between 2:30 and 5:00 and drop you back in the morning. As we checked in, Keiko-San asked our itinerary in Shibu Onsen and arranged to drive us to the monkey park, where there were plenty of adorable monkeys, even though it was early October. The forested path home from the park was lovely. We enjoyed drinking tea in our room, which looked invitingly over an onsen, watching the Japanese weekenders clomp up the street visiting the baths in their yukata. The ryokan's tub was my favourite though. It is definitely worth eating dinner and breakfast at the ryokan, although there are nearby options available. The souvenir onsen towels for sale at the front desk make lovely teatowels. Steam rises from the rushing spring water under the street and delicious eggs, soft boiled in onsen water are sold from a basket there. The locals are friendly, happy people.

I think this is one of the few ryokans in Shibuonsen that cater to foreigners and have reasonable prices so it was one of our top choices. Arriving at Shibuonsen was easy once we arrived at the railway station from Tokyo - BIG difference in temperature - piles of snow (it was February) and a really mountain-y feel. The friendly driver picked us up from the station (the helpful lady at the counter called the ryokan to come and pick us up) and the friendly owner lady greeted us at the entrance. We were shown to our room - it was the 6-mat room (the smallest one?) with its own toilet/sink. The latter were honestly not much use - they were absolutely tiny (I'm of an average height and my knees hit the wall) and there was no warm water at all (it being February, it didn't help). So don't count on these! The room itself was definitely rustic (it being a traditional ryokan) and the staff set up a table with a heater underneath it, which was removed after dinner and the sleep mats were laid out for us (they forgot to do it on the second day though). Size-wise, it was very small but doable for 2 people. There was free wifi, which was great. I got a student dorm/camping feel from the whole thing and it was difficult living on the floor but it's definitely a memorable experience!

We were given the traditional robes before dinner, which was, as everyone says, stunning! We bought the mid-priced meal option (apparently the cheapest one is vegetarian and features less food and the top of the range option, called the "steak" option, is the most luxurious one). The lady taking care of the diners was really keen to please and friendly - our food was already set out for us when we came down and it was mostly different at each of the 2 dinners and breakfasts. It was definitely the highlight of the experience. There's a women's and a men's bath downstairs - the women's had a few fragrant apples swimming in the hot tub, which really added to the atmosphere. I really tried to find a place where my husband and I could share a tub but these were really expensive so we tried to agree how long we'd stay in each one, which was annoying but oh well. We visited almost all of the hot tubs in town, which are generally quite small and rustic. It's really just a few streets you walk around in town but if it's cold, be quick or you'll freeze! There was not much else to do in town aside from going to see the snow monkeys (really fun). I think there might be more to see in summer, etc. but we really wanted to see the monkeys so we came in February. We got driven to the rail station on the way back too.

Room Tip: The 6-mat room with the private toilet is for 2 people max and the toilet/sink are unusable in cold...

AS all the other reviews stay...the owners of this ryokan are incredibly hospitable. We drove to Shibu Onsen and to the ryokan which is right in the centre of the town. The owner immediately took our car to park it in undercover parking. Then we checked into our room and found it be very large and well appointed. We looked out onto the street and already there was the sound of people walking up an down the street in their geta. The town is so quaint - is in very nice condition and has a great feel as everyone seems to be out in their yukata. There are a few very old temples to look at and a river running though the town.
The dinner was fabulous and the after dinner walk and people watching in the town was a great end to the day. The onsen in town are old and SOOOO hot, but they do have taps where you can add cold water....still really hot but a great experience.
All in a a great stay with very hospitable hosts. They do offer drop offs at the station and the monkey park (at key times of course as they cannot be available all day to drive guests around) but we drove some of the way and parked, and then took a lovely 20 minute walk to the monkey park - highly recommended. I would definitely recommend this ryokan, and it is a great way to see old Japan.

I had a wonderful relaxing time in this very friendly and characteristic japanese inn. The owners are amazingly joyful and kind, adding a happy experience to their family run hotel . Plus they make a wonderful traditional japanese kitchen, so good that you will miss it when trying other restaurants around Japan. Totally worth our stop when visiting Japan for the first time, without mentioning it's a couple of minutes from the snow monkeys. Forget about the over crowded big modern hotels you'll find in Tokyo; here you'll find a human dimension with real people with a passion for their business. Thank you!
