My favourite memory from my trip to Japan was taking the train from Tokyo to Nagano then Nagano to Yudanaka -arriving by train in the small moutain village with thick white snow covering everything was amazing! The helpful info centre staff checked me in to the Shimaya Ryokan.Mr and Mrs Shimaya were wonderful hosts, they have been running the hotel for many years. My room was a traditional room, with futon, and low table. There was nice hot green tea waiting. The dining room was a blast from the past with 70s style jukebox and piano. I'm a vegetarian but that was no problem, the food was devine! After visiting the snow monkeys guests can enjoy a steamy osen (hotspring) back at the hotel. I loved it wish I could have stayed longer.

My fiancé and I stayed at Shimaya for two nights out of a 10 day trip to Japan and it was our favorite place by far! Our hosts were as kind and helpful as one could possibly hope for, from driving us to and from the monkey park every day to suggesting delicious places to eat! We felt very welcome the whole time we were there and we were sad to leave when it came time to move onto the next place.
The accommodations themselves were superb. The whole place is very clean, the rooms are sizable, especially compared to other places we stayed. There was always hot water and green tea in the room. Our balcony looked out at the mountains and across the town. It's perfectly situated to walk anywhere in town. You can even walk to the monkey park if you want. The floor mats were very comfortable and they provided very soft and cozy quilts to keep warm. There was also a thermostat with which we could control the temperature so it wasn't cold in the rooms. There was a bathroom and a shower ensuite in our room, which was definitely a plus! They even made a nice breakfast for everyone every morning.
If I'm ever back in Yudanaka, this is where I would want to stay again. They made an already fun trip that much more enjoyable!

Room Tip: There aren't that many rooms, it's not a large hotel, so they're all good as far as we k...

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a trip around Japan in April and it was great and a real experience as it was a typical japanese guest house with futons on the floor. The couple who own it were absolutely charming and they drove us to the monkey sanctuary and back to the station. Other than the monkey place there is not a great deal to do in the town as it was very quiet but it was a perfect retreat for us as we had just come from Tokyo. They offered a japanese or western style breakfast for a small extra amount and we opted for western which was absolutely lovely.

Some parts of the hotel itself are a little bit shabby, but it's not so bad. Some parts, such as the big private onsen room (which you can book in advance every day, for free) are new and very nice. However, what makes the place special is that the owners are extremely friendly and helpful, and would do whatever they can for you. They drove us to the start of the walking path to the monkey park, they drove us to the railway station, etc., and whatever you request they will help you.

Mr. and Mrs. Yumoto and Shimaya Ryokan exemplify Japanese hospitality. It was our favorite place to stay during our 22 days in Japan, and we would solidly recommend it for anyone looking for a genuine, safe, fascinating place to stay.

I have never experienced the customer service I did at Shimaya. Mr. Yumoto and his wife were absolutely amazing. They loaned us rubber boots and drove us to the entrance of the Monkey Park. They went above and beyond to get to know us and what we were interested in doing while we were visiting. Mr. Yumoto even went the extra mile to drive us to the second train stop to make sure we made the train back to Nagano. The stay was one of the major highlights of our trip. Thank you!

Stayed there last January. Lovely place to stay - they lent us snowshoes, drove us to the monkey park and to the station when we are leaving. Great food with warm hospitality. Their keepsakes still adorn our suitcases. We remember our time in Shimaya quite fondly.
